Auburn travels to Kyle Field this Saturday to face Texas A&M and its ubiquitous quarterback Johnny Manziel. Naturally, results is going to result in some talk comparing Manziel, the reigning Heisman Trophy-winner, to former Auburn QB and 2010 Heisman winner Cam Newton. Which is exactly what Auburn head football coach Gus Malzahn (who coached Newton as Auburn offensive coordinator in 2010) did on Tuesday.
"I would say probably those two are probably two of the best that ever played the game in college football," Malzahn said. "We only got to see Cam Newton for one year, but this guy, he's in the same element. They're different but they're still some of the best to ever play."
Malzahn also made the analogy to Manziel and video games.
"It's easy to make comparisons in college football, especially when once-in-a-lifetime players seemingly pop up once every few years in the game these days, especially at quarterback. "It's almost like watching a video game sometimes with the stuff he does," Malzahn said of Manziel."
It will be interesting to see if and how Malzahn uses his experience with Newton to try to stop Manziel from decimating Auburn like he did in Texas A&M's 63-21 stomping of Auburn inside Jordan-Hare Stadium in 2012.
