The story behind former Florida wide receivers coach Joker Phillips' abrupt resignation on Wednesday is getting a little clearer. Charles Robinson and Pat Forde are reporting that Phillips was allegedly involved with a possible recruiting violation with a high school prospect.
Robinson and Forde are reporting that the NCAA was given a photo allegedly showing Phillips "sitting in a restaurant with a high school recruit during a mandated dead period in recruiting." The photo was reportedly turned in by a person with connections with Miami's football program.
The article suggests that the incident was initially described as a violation of the NCAA's "bump rule," which bars coaches having "impermissible dialogue" with a recruiting prospect during an unplanned or unintentional crossing of paths between the two. The NCAA defines this as a secondary violation.
However if the meeting between coach and prospect was intentionally "premeditated or arranged," the violation could be more serious.
Neither the University of Florida or the University of Miami have responded to Robinson and Forde's article.
