The first day of the FCS college football season isn't going well for Kyle Flood. The Rutgers head coach has indefinitely suspended five members of the Scarlet Knights football team after they were arrested on charges related to two separate incidents on the Rutger's campus.
Four players, defensive back Nadir Barnwell, fullback Razohnn Gross, cornerback Ruhann Peele, and free safety Delon Stephenson, face charges of "aggravated assault, riot, and conspiracy to commit a riot" in connection with an incident in August where they are accused of being part of a group of six people who assaulted another group of people. A member of the group that was assaulted reportedly was a Rutgers student, who suffered a broken jaw.
Barnwell is also at the center of an investigation in whether Flood improperly contacted a Rutgers professor via e-mail in regards to Barnwell's academic eligibility.
The other player, CB Dre Boggs, is accused of taking part of three separate home invasions on the Rutgers campus along with former Rutgers wide receiver Tejay Johnson. He faces what are described as charges of "robbery, burglary while armed, and conspiracy to commit an armed robbery."
Boggs and Stephenson were listed as starters on Rutgers Week 1 depth chart.
Flood has announced that he intends to coach Saturday's season opener against Norfolk State despite the controversy surrounding Barnwell.
