GLX reviews Red Robin: The Grail.
Writer - Christopher Yost
Penciller - Ramon Bachs
Inkers - Ramon Bachs, Art Thibert and Guy Major
Colorist - Guy Major
Though Tim Drake has been my generation's Robin, he tends to be better as a supporting character than a main character. With Red Robin: The Grail, Tim Drake is no longer Robin; instead, he now fights crime as Red Robin. With a new direction and a new costume, is Red Robin worthy of your time?
Bruce Wayne is dead. Tim Drake doesn't believe that he's dead. Characters old and new emerge, while Tim must make some difficult decisions on his quest to prove that Bruce Wayne is alive.
The plot has enough interesting things going for it. Though some of the plot points aren't engaging, there's enough here to make the story interesting. Christopher Yost just did a decent job of handling the characters and the dialogue. While there's nothing off about them, Yost's characters just have enough depth for them to be believable. He could've done a better job of giving the characters a more unique voice.
Ramon Bachs' work is simply mediocre. There's nothing eye-catching or horrible about it. The only time that it has a little bit of pizzaz to it is when Art Thibert briefly inked over his work. Guy Major's colors are appropriate and that's all there is to it. There are a few flaws, but it's the consistently, enjoyable characteristic of the art.
Despite some interesting plot developments, I can't recommend Red Robin: The Grail. The characters are simply adequate and the art doesn't do Yost's script any favors. The next Red Robin collection will see Bachs replaced by Marcus To. Hopefully, Yost and To can make Red Robin into a solid read.
