Who is Jake Ellis? #1 Review

GLX takes a look at Who is Jake Ellis? #1.

Writer - Nathan Edmondson

Artist- Tonci Zonjic

Last year, Nathan Edmondson and Brett Weldele's The Light came out and it was good. It was the 1st Edmondson worked that I ever got and I really enjoyed it. When Who is Jake Ellis? was announced, I admit that I was ready to buy every issue. The concept of a "gun-for-hire" with a guardian angel sounded cool and Edmondson teaming up with Tonci Zonjic made Who is Jake Ellis? something that I should keep my eye on.

Most mainstream comics try to grab readers with shocking revelations, deaths and returns that will change everything "for good". Who is Jake Ellis? #1's 1st 3 pages grabbed me and kept my butt planted until I was done with the comic. No gimmicks; no hype. Just a purely awesome scene to grab me in. The rest of the comic is great, as well. The relationship between Jon Moore and Jake Ellis is interesting. Jon is adventurous, while Jake is cautious and inhuman. While Jon is making love with a woman, Jake shows no real emotion until danger is heading towards Jon's way.

Zonjic's art has looked sharp in the past, but I'm really digging his work in Jake Ellis. His work is detailed, but brimming with life. Now, I'm used to seeing him handle everything about the art, but the colors. His coloring is solid throughout the comic, but his color choices in the opening scene and Jon's escape from his hotel room are eye-catching. One thing that I have to point out is that this comic features a lot of black. Most comics typically have white gutters (the space between panels); Zonjic's choice to go with black instead is a bold and smart decision.

Who is Jake Ellis? #1 is a great debut issue. Edmondson's wonderful writing and Zonjic's terrific art make this one a winner. I have no doubt that the two of them will keep up the good work.
