GLX reviews Daytripper #8.
Let me just get this out of the way - Bras dies. It's been a staple of the mini-series since issue #1. What makes things interesting is that this issue's main characters are Ana (his wife) and Miguel (his son). That doesn't mean that Bras' presence is felt in the comic. His lack of panel time actually makes this one of the best issues of this mini series, so far.
In this issue, Bras has become a successful author and he is constantly promoting his work; but he still has time for his family. Through various forms of communication, Bras constantly sends his love to his family. His actions are so sweet that it made my heart melt As I mentioned before, Bras dies. His death makes those moments even more special as they're the only physical items of love for his family.
For those who have been reading Daytripper, you already know how that the art is superb. For those are just hearing about this comic for the first time, let me break it down for you. The art is fluid, well crafted and honest. There's no trace of light boxing or an over reliance on photo references. Just solid work from the heart to the page.
Normally, I would list the creators that worked on a comic. I've avoided that intentionally, but not out of disrespect to the creators. I did that to highlight my biggest issue with this comic - none of the creators (with the exception of Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon being mentioned on the cover) are listed in the comic. I'm sure that it's not intentional, but it still bugs me.
Even with that in mind, Daytripper #8 is a powerful comic. Ba and Moon go all out to deliver a powerful issue dealing with the absence of a loved one (in life and in death). If you've never tried Daytripper before, this is an issue that you need to get. It's self-contained, yet it rewards those that have been reading since issue #1. It has more heart than most comics on the stands and it's definitely worth the $3 price tag.
