Disc Four Total Time: 66:44

Those who hungered for the themes teased in Batman The Animated Series Soundtrack Volume 1, the Gotham City Overture, get their due here in full form. Each disc is packed with almost close to eighty minutes of music. This is a music lover of Batman's wet dream. The only downside is we don't get an introspective piece from the late great Shirley Walker, nor another eighteen minute track teasing more wondrous themes as the previous volume did. What we do get in extras this time about is a lengthy little book showcasing various art from the series and going into detail how of the various composers for the series (Danny Elfman, Jeff Atmajian, Shirley Walker, Carl Swander Johnson, Carlos Rodriguez, Lolita Ritmanis, Peter Davison, Stuart Balcomb, Michael McCuistion, and Harvey R. Cohen) all came on board plus what they did after it. It's a very fascinating piece of music lore to read.

The music itself, like the previous volume, is superb musical quality. It's never grainy and the transition to each track is PERFECT. With almost close to eight minutes on each track they just flow so quickly, you can't believe you're on fourth CD when you know you already recall listening to the first CD.

That's the only issue I have with it all. To have all of this just makes you hunger for more! This volume, much like its predecessor, is being swooped up wholesale by fans and you know a third volume will be happening in the future. I kind of hope that this opens the doors to other DC Animated musical fare because I would kill for Superman: The Animated Series (dat Superman, Lobo, Brainiac, and Apoklips themes) or Batman Beyond score albums.

Still, what you get in this volume is just so much and all so welcoming. Being an orchestral musical lover, to finally listen to “Heart of Ice” or “If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?” is just musical bliss for me. I've always wanted to hear the themes stand by themselves after watching the episodes (well I lost count). It's just an added bonus to have “Demon's Quest Parts 1 & 2” and “Read My Lips”. You really get a feel of the variety of music the composers for this show produced and just the labors they undertook. Again just even listening to this shows you how different Batman: the Animated Series was to standard American animated fare.

So if my glowing and fawning over this wasn't a hint enough, yeah I give this a MUST BUY. But if I was to do this in a score format like my television reviews, this is perfect five out of five. The richness of the various musical pieces is layered throughout every CD of the four you get. You get variations of the Batman theme AND you get the complete scores to a ton of long sought after episodes. It continues off of the previous volume and gives us then some. If you're a fan of the various musical themes of Batman, well you MUST OWN this album. It's that good!
