Nightfly's Guide to Fall's Primetime TV

Nightfly lists his recommended shows coming up this month and next.

With the Fall TV season just about to begin, I decided to share my recommendations and mention the early preview premieres currently online, OnDemand and/or on Hulu.

So far I've screened the premieres of Revolution (NBC), The New Normal (NBC), Go On (NBC), Ben and Kate (FOX), The Mindy Project (FOX) and Animal Hospital (NBC). Though I found the story sadder than expected, Revolution really impressed me on a number of levels - not the least of which is its superlative cast. Kudos to J.J. Abrams for delivering yet another outstanding and mysterious drama series.

Of the sitcoms I've already seen The New Normal was by far my favorite, with Go On and Ben and Kate also touching my heart. The Mindy Project was entertaining enough that I'll keep watching but mainly for its fun and talented cast - its writing is, as a friend put it, "mostly geared towards women."

I admittedly haven't researched the many new Reality Shows premiering this Fall, but I am genuinely looking forward to Syfy's upcoming competition series, Hot Set (from the producers of Face Off), making the scene September 18th.

Below is my recommended Top 10 list of hour-long dramas debuting this month and next, along with short (incomplete) lists of key cast and crew that've particularly enticed me to watch. For the record, I'm fairly loyal to actors, directors and producers I admire and tend to watch shows because of who's in them and who's producing them rather than what they're specifically about.

1. Revolution (NBC) - 9.17  (Created by Eric Kripke) (E.P.: J.J. Abrams, Eric Kripke & Bryan Burk)
(Starring: Billy Burke, Giancarlo Esposito, Elizabeth Mitchell, Tim Guinee, Maria Howell & Tracy Spiridako)

Now onto my Top 5 list of hour-long dramas scheduled for release later in 2012 and into 2013.
1. Defiance (Syfy) - April, 2013  (Dir: Scott Stewart) (E.P.: Michael Taylor, Rockne S. O'Bannon & Kevin Murphy)

3. Infamous (NBC)  (E.P.: Gail Berman, Liz Heldens, Lloyd Braun, Gene Stein & Peter Horton)
(Starring: Victor Garber, Meagan Good, Katherine LaNasa, Laz Alonso & Tate Donovan)

4. Mistresses (ABC)  (Created by K.J. Steinberg)
(Starring: Alyssa Milano, Yunjin Kim, Rochelle Aytes, Jason George & Jes Macallan)

5. Red Widow (ABC)  (Created by Melissa Rosenberg)
(Starring: Radha Mitchell, Jaime Ray Newman, Lee Tergesen & Rade Serbedzija)

For those who like to laugh, there (unfortunately) just aren't as many new sitcoms this season as there are new dramas. I take it as a positive sign, though, that so many already existing comedies from last season and before survived thus eliminating the need for multiple replacements. As such, my recommended list of new sitcoms to check out is a Top 5 list instead of Top 10. Below, I again include some Runners Up as well as an additional Top 5 list of comedies debuting later this year and in 2013.

1. The New Normal (NBC) - 9.11  (Created by Ryan Murphy)
(Starring: Andrew Rannells, Justin Bartha, Georgia King, NeNe Leakes & Ellen Barkin)

2. Go On (NBC) - 9.11  (Created by Scott Silveri)
(Starring: Matthew Perry, John Cho, Julie White, Laura Benanti & Brett Gelman)

3. Ben and Kate (FOX) - 9.25  (E.P.: Dana Fox, Randy Cordray, Peter Chernin & Katherine Pope)
(Starring: Dakota Johnson, Lucy Punch, Nat Faxon & Echo Kellum)

4. The Neighbors (ABC) - 9.26  (Created by Dan Fogelman)
(Starring: Jami Gertz, Lenny Venito, Simon Templeman & Toks Olagundoye)

5. The Mindy Project (FOX) - 9.25  (Created by Mindy Kaling) (E.P.: Kaling, Charles McDougall, B.J. Novak & Howard Klein)
(Starring: Mindy Kaling, Anna Camp, Stephen Tobolowsky, Chris Messina & Ed Weeks)

* Runners Up
1. Guys with Kids (NBC) - 9.26  (Created by Jimmy Fallon) (E.P.: Fallon, Charlie Grandy & Amy Ozols)
(Starring: Anthony Anderson, Jesse Bradford, Jamie-Lynn Sigler & Tempestt Bledsoe)

2. Partners (CBS) - 9.24  (Created by David Kohan & Max Mutchnick)
(Starring: David Krumholtz, Brandon Routh, Michael Urie & Sophia Bush)

And for sitcoms debuting in upcoming months, here's a Top 5 list of comedies I'm seriously looking forward to. I wish these series were premiering sooner rather than later.
1. Save Me (NBC)  (Created by John Scott Shepherd) (E.P.: Shepherd, Scott Winant, Neal Moritz, Vivian Cannon & Alexa Junge)
(Starring: Anne Heche, Michael Landes, Alexandra Breckenridge, Heather Burns & Madison Davenport)

2. The Goodwin Games (FOX)  (E.P.: Carter Bays, Chris Harris & Craig Thomas)
(Starring: Becki Newton, Scott Foley, Jake Lacy, Felisha Terrell & Melissa Tang)

3. How to Live With Your Parents (ABC)  (E.P.: Claudia Lonow, Brian Grazer & Francie Calfo)
(Starring: Sarah Chalke, Elizabeth Perkins, Brad Garrett & Orlando Jones)

4. 1600 Penn (NBC)  (Created by Jon Lovett, Josh Gad & Jason Winer)
(Starring: Bill Pullman, Jenna Elfman, Josh Gad & Andre Holland)
