DC Announces Two New Titles and 52 Variants for JLA

With the cancellation of four titles last month, many were wondering if DC was finally going to end their attempt to publish 52 titles a month.  We discovered today that the answer is a resounding "no". 

In addition to Justice League of America and Threshold, DC will be releasing two new solo series in February.  The first, Katana, will be written by Ann Nocenti with art by  Alex Sanchez.  The second,  Vibe, will be written by Arrow writer Andrew Kreisberg  with art by Pete Woods.  That's right, in February, we'll be getting a Vibe ongoing series.  Digest that.

Also announced is that Jeff Lemire would be taking over Green Arrow, presumably to capitalize on the character's increased exposure in Justice League of America and Arrow.  Joining Lemire is artist Andrea Sorrentino.

Finally, DC announced that it would be releasing 52 variant covers for Justice League of America, the new series by Geoff Johns and David Finch.  Fifty-fucking-two variant covers.  50 of the covers will focus on individual states.  The only upside for this shameless cash grab is that DC won't force retailers to meet certain ordering levels in order to get certain covers in store.  Retailers will be able to order whatever covers they'd like and (allegedly) all will be equally available to all retailers. 

All in all, we get one bit of good news (Lemire on Green Arrow) two bits of non-impressive news (I'm sorry but a Vibe solo series sounds like it could rival G.I Combat for quickest cancelled New 52 series) and one humongous WTF in the 52 variant covers.  Someone needs to kill this variant fad.  It's officially over.
