Paramount will be showing the first nine minutes from Star Trek 2: Into Darkness starting December 14th on showings of The Hobbit on 500 IMAX 3-D Screens.  This will be the first time exclusive footage has been played in IMAX 3D.

President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment, Greg Foster had this to say:

“Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park – the footage is absolutely incredibl.  Their use of the IMAX Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike, and we’re thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended ‘first look’ at this highly anticipated summer blockbuster.”

Much like Nolan did with the Dark Knight's intro, offering IMAX fans a chance to see a portion of the movie filmed with IMAX cameras, JJ Abrams hopes to offer the same experience here.  The good news for fans though is that they will be paying the premium price to get into an IMAX movie that in and of itself will be worth the price of extra admission costs and not just paying to see a Star Trek preview.
