A recent web-simulcast episode of Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (宇宙戦艦ヤマト2199 Uchū Senkan Yamato 2199) for the Japan audience announced that the series will be launching overseas and be given a title more familiar to American audiences: Star Blazers 2199. There was no information about which countries this will be shown in, nor the languages that it will be translated to.
Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is a retelling of the original 1974 Space Battleship Yamato anime television series which started in April 2012. The series is being released in the theater as long episodes and then to home video and television at a later date. The story chronicles the journey of the Yamato (Argo in the USA), an interstellar space cruiser built inside the husk of the World War II Japanese battleship, the Yamato. At the start of the series, the Earth is mostly devastated by the alien Gamilas (in the USA Gamilon) bombardment and receives a message from the distant planet Iscandar with the plans to build the Yamato and travel to their planet to retrieve a device to save the Earth. There is a one-year deadline before all on Earth will be lost.
Star Blazers aired in the USA starting in 1979 and was dubbed in English. Many parts were edited and the episodes were gathered largely from the first 3 seasons of the anime.
This reporter is very excited about this news and thinks Yamato 2199 is one of the most gorgeous anime of 2012. Though we don't know where, when, or which languages this will be released for, he has his fingers and toes crossed that it comes to the USA.
