Source: The Grudge's Shimizu Helms Live-Action Kiki's Delivery Service
In early April, rumors started to swirl around that there were plans to produce a live-action version of Studio Ghibli's beloved Kiki's Delivery Service (in Japan: Majo no Takkyūbin 魔女の宅急便). A few days later, fans of the 1989 classic were disappointed to find out that Studio Ghibli denied any involvement with such a production.
Turns out, both items were true. Ghibli's film is based on the 1985 novel Majo no Takkyūbin by Eiko Kadono (角野 栄子) and it was revealed that a live-action movie was being produced based on the original novel.
The film will be directed by Takashi Shimizu (清水 崇 of The Grudge/Juon fame!) and will star 16-year-old newcomer Fūka Koshiba (小芝風花) as Kiki/Minami Takayama. Unlike the Ghibli film which covered the single novel that was published at the time, the live-action version will use the first two novels as its basis.
The story revolves around the young witch spending a year in a town apart from other witches (but with her cat Jiji), using her magic to earn a living. The live-action film is expected to fly into theaters in Spring 2014.
