Overthought Bubble #10: It's Not All Bad

But it's not good either.



My apologies to all three of you who have been wondering why there hasn't been an Over-Thought Bubble in the past few weeks. I've been taking a break because articles can be hard to squeeze out on a regular basis on top of your regular life tasks such as "working" and "spending time with people you love."

Now I know these article often spell out doom and gloom as I play "fantasy footballfantasy football about whether or not Marvel can run their business properly" and remind you that you will never get rid of Brian Michael Bendis. Heck, even when I complimented Valiant I criticized them. The point is, I'm a crappy person. So in the spirit of taking a breather, I want to remind you that it's not all bad. There's some great stuff happening in the industry, and I'd like to make take today to highlight some of those good things.

First let's start with Oni Press. As a small publisher, Oni Press is reported to be paying artists an amount that is "impressive for their size." Josh Fialkov, who has been famously worked to the point of poor health, has publicly expressed his support and gratitude for the publisher. As little guys they're doing a great job of creating meaningful titles with diverse casts and wonderfully absurd stories. Not to mention the fact that these folks brought back a big scoop of nostalgia with Invader Zim.

Oni not your cup of happiness tea? Well try this: open submissions are becoming more prevalent. This is a huge deal for an industry that would rather keep a mediocre writer than risk hiring a new potentially great writer. Double Take, Oni, Image Shadowline, and more have opened their doors to anyone with a script or a sketchbook. While this doesn't make breaking into the industry easy, it does open the door to people who would otherwise be shut out for not having the right connections.

That is of course assuming you want to write for a company. As respectable as these companies may be, they are companies, and sometimes you need the freedom to do your own thing. This decade has brought forth an immeasurable number of tools to support independent creators, from funding sources to powerful creative freeware. While these talented folks may easily make it in the mainstream industry if they tried, as Alex de Campi once asked, "[S]hould you show your portfolio[?] Why would you need to?"

Speaking of de Campi, the number of women and minority creators, and characters, in the industry is increasing. While the target is still long off and it is still harder for non-white-men to make it in the industry, the industry is moving in the right direction. People in the industry have begun to speak out, and the industry secrets that many "comics journalists" have held back for the sake of #TeamComics are coming to light.

The industry still has a long way to go. There is rampant sexual harassment, underpaid creators, exploited hopefuls, and over priced underdeveloped products. But when I say that, it is important to remember that not it's not all bad... just mostly bad.
