Oh, I'm gonna get comments for posting that, won't I (literally one write-in WAS The Last Jedi)? The HATE WAS STRONG THIS YEAR. With 464 votes in total (eclipsing last year's voting) you truly were fueled with rage this year. Good. GOOD!!! That hate only fuels MORE ARTICLES! TO GIVE THIS YEARLY TRADITION LIFE!! Much like last year there were a TON of write-in votes.
And ironically enough, if they paid any mind to the fact that one of the staff, Tim Midura was an actual option on the poll this year then well, I'd be talking more about how much RAGE coursed through you to actually make him appear on this list. I mean, if you did actually vote for him. He actually would have shown up. So to those who cast these votes in:
Tim Midura ignores the forums entirely for 2 years, including error fixes and up
Which was entered THREE TIMES in the optional poll section and:
How in the bloody hell does Tim Midura still have a job here??
Whelp you only have yourselves to blame for deciding to cast your votes there instead of you know voting for the Tim Midura option I gave you. Instead, you reap what you sow.
With IDW relaunching their Transformers brand one voter threw this option in there:
IDW refocuses their Transformers brand to focus on Young Bumblebee.
Out of all the write-ins I was actually tempted to put this in. BUT-- the book might be open on this one given this is the year of the relaunch for the brand. So, we shall see.
My favorite write-in out of them all was this one:
The Outhouse acting like vindictive brats over anything that DC does.
Whelp, I think we have kind have a right to be as such. That, and if we didn't well, DC Comics the voting says otherwise. Interestingly, there were two right in votes for Scottie Young's Deadpool run.
Duggan off Deadpool. Young on.
Duggan off Deadpool. Deadpool rebooted. Young on and can't write Deadpool.
Plus we got this write-in:
I am very curious as to why, but someone was peeved by Star Trek: Discovery much like this person was on Daredevil:
Daredevil Season 3 completely fucks up Bullseye's characterization
But whomever that person who hated Season 3 probably is laughing given well-- more on that later. I almost want to think Judas Terror himself wrote this write-in vote for this particular moment:
"Batman Comics Still Exist." or, "Agents of SHIELD not cancelled".
But he probably didn't, and I have my suspicions on who did. And that's ALL the write-in votes. It's time for four runners-up for MOST MADDENING MOMENT OF THE YEAR 2018!!!
#5 Jon Kent is aged up to be an edgy teenager and Bat Dick destroys DC's mature Black Label line of comics. (21 Votes)
The former of this little tie isn't fully out yet. But ever since a character design of an aged Jon along with an issue of Superman confessing to his young son that he thought about killing Batman constantly the fear was planted, and this cover to Superman #9 above made readers' seethe of what was to become of the breakout new DC hero of the "Rebirth" line just three years ago. Not surprisingly THE MOMENT the new older Jon showed up in Superman #6 was released on December 12th voting for this began to increase and surpass then actually surpass writer Brian Bendis being put on both Superman comics (that got 20 votes).
Then there's the Bat-dick.
Yes, the Bat-dick caused so much stir #2 and #3 of the comic was pushed back with well, the next new Black-Label comic THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE #1 was pulled from it's January 30th release date. Well, THREE JOKERS and the sequel to Batman: White Knight be as heavily censored or pulled all-together? We shall see.
#4 Netflix cancels Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Daredevil. (22 Votes)
The almost complete death of the Marvel heroes on Netflix (Jessica Jones Season 3 will hit sometime this year with Season 2 of the Punisher about to premiere in a few weeks) truly irked some fans. Add to the fact that Iron Fist had a surprising descent Season 2 with Luke Cage/Daredevil had some damn good seasons as well. With the Disney+ streaming service looming this year, the fate of these shows seemed all but guaranteed to be casualties due Netflix wanting to cut ties with their new rivals.
#3 DC spoils the plot of one of their most hyped stories in a New York Times article 2 days before release. - NY Times Issue #7.1.18 (25 Votes)
Ah, the turning point for me when it came to Tom King's Batman run, and the EXACT moment the quality of DC Comics quality began to dip back down to "New 52" levels of bad. Oh, of course the wisen comic fan knew what was going to happen, but to those who jumped on the hype train Tom King built his Batman run on (thus far) with Bruce/Selina's relationship grew more and more, buying the various one-shots leading up to it all, and then-- nothing. Is it any wonder why Marvel made a promise to readers no shenanigans to their readers for Fantastic Four #5 (even poking fun at surprise interventions)?
But let's not forget the real moment at DC that turned fans off to them even more.
#2 Wally West, Roy Harper, and more pointless death in Heroes in Crisis. (31 Votes)
This year, the "great" event that has made fans cringe and wale in agony has been DC's Heroes in Crisis. #1 of the comic kicked that off quite simply by killing the mascot of their "Rebirth" line Wally West, and Roy Harper. Add to that MORE dead Titans (because it isn't an infamous DC event with some dead Titans), a popular Batman villain being axed, and you've got a recipe that are making fans ironically do this:
Not me though. I am on this nasty ride of a comic. No matter how bad it gets. ... I am so dead when I walk around C2E2 this year, won't I? Eh, I am prepared for whatever the higher-ups at DC throw at me. Still, this was a worthy runner-up to the #1 most Maddening Moment of the year.
Speaking of that. THE WINNER for MOST MADDENING MOMENT OF 2018 goes too...
#1 James Gunn is fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. (46 Votes)
What else was it going to be? During day one of SDCC all hell broke loose when old tweets of Guardians of the Galaxy and Vol. 2 director James Gunn resurfaced. The very next day Disney fired the popular director from the third film and well-- we've been talking about it since.
Add to the fact the controversial person behind on how Gunn's old tweets resurfacing, Mike Cernovich, being an ultra-conservative nutball. Then you have one of the Guardians co-stars Dave Bautista roasting Disney any chance on Twitter while defending Gunn. With that sort of drama is it any wonder this was the most maddening moment of the year for us nerds?
So there you have it. These were the moments that drove you MAD in 2018. What will come about in 2019? Who knows (save Marvel and DC dropping TWO Maddening Moments this past Wednesday). I am merely a collector and watcher of what drives geekdom crazy.
Until next time folks...
