Nightfly lists his preferred picks from the previous week of primetime programming.
TV Week in Review (week of 6/26/11)
Happy 4th of July weekend!! Jumping right into WiR business, the thrilling season premiere of True Blood helped HBO top my Scripted Shows List for the fourth week consecutively. The E! Channel deserves congrats for topping my Reality Shows List for the first time ever, via their outstanding Selena Gomez Special. Betty White and the ladies of Hot in Cleveland take my top Summer Sitcoms slot for a second week in-a-row! My spotlighted Music Video of the Week is actually a newly released 20min documentary about Beyoncé's new abum "4." But don't worry, if you were expecting non-documentary music videos you won't be disappointed. I've included the six (6) highest profile videos released this past week and ordered them (to my liking) for loopable play. My Guest Star of the Week gave me a little grief; first, there were several noteworthy guest appearances in contention, and second, the two I made co-honorees *I hope* will become recurring characters. I checked IMDB and neither is listed as returning soon.
As for tonight (7/3) don't miss the season finale of HBO's Treme. ABC-Family is airing a three episode catch-up marathon of Chloe King Tuesday (7/5), so if you've been wishing you caught that series from the beginning this is your second chance to. Wednesday (7/6) brings the season closers of Hollywood Treasure (Syfy) & Men of a Certain Age (TNT), while Thursday (7/7) delivers the much-anticipated return of Big Brother (on CBS). The National Geographic Channel airs some intriguing dinosaur programming on Thursday, and also that nite, PBS will air a Special Presentation of An American Family: Anniversary Edition. The fourth season premiere of UK sci-fi hit Torchwood debuts its inaugural season as a first-run American series this Friday (7/8) as Torchwood: Miracle Day (on Starz). Its accompanying webseries, Torchwood: Web of Lies , will run parallel to the TV series and is not what I'd previously expected. You can read in detail about it here, but, the nutshell version is that it's an interactive animated phone app, telling its story (and offering clues to the Miracle Day mystery) across ten three-minute motion comic webisodes downloadable from iTunes, starting this week. It's truthfully a game as much as a web series and the first one is free!
The second season premiere of (former Design Star winner) Emily Henderson's series, Secrets From a Stylist, hits HGTV next Saturday (7/9). Emily's adorable and a genius designer to boot - if you haven't seen her show yet, you're missing out.

Sure it seems like a lot (and it is), but this week I only screened thirty-three hours of programming to compile this column. Plenty of hour-long scripted shows and reality shows mean there're full honorable mention rosters for those categories, though the Summer Sitcom section enjoys only one, A.N.T. Farm (Disney). Leverage, HawthoRNe, White Collar, CHAOS & Rookie Blue almost made my Scripted List, while, Through the Wormhole, Hollywood Treasure, Rocco's Dinner Party, and My Yard Goes Disney just missed being Reality picks.
As mentioned in my opening paragraph, my Guest Star of the Week selection gave me a bit of a fit (unsure of who might be returning/recurring or not)... but aside from the honorees I chose, both Gary Cole (on True Blood) & Dot Jones on The Glee Project turned in moving & memorable guest appearances as well.
Check out a forceful list of every show I watched for this week's 4th of July weekend column here.
Happy Birthday to Actor/Producer/Stuntman Tom Cruise today!! An early twitter follower who, merely by giving my efforts that e-nod (about a half a year ago), sent a huge gust of wind to my sails just when I needed it. I warmly wish Tom and his family all the best this special weekend. If you missed the internet premiere of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol's trailer this past week, make sure to take a look at it (below). And, if you're not already doing so, make a wise move and follow Tom on twitter.
Thanks to all who've stuck with my Week in Review column for the past year, and a Happy 4th of July salute to anyone just finding it for the first time! Have fun this weekend. Be Well & Happy Viewing!
