Nightfly's TV Week in Review 8/14/11 - True Blood, Torchwood & more!

Entertainment Editor Nightfly lists his preferred picks from the previous week of primetime programming.

TV Week in Review (week of 8/14/11)

Congrats to Syfy for being the only net to earn two slots on my one-hour Scripted List this week. This is the fourth week in-a-row that Syfy has garnered two spots on that list. Cinemax's Strike Back made my Scripted List for its second consecutive week since premiering. I couldn't choose just one Top of the List pick this outing so I decided to make this week's #1 spot a tie. Turns out, according to my records, this is the first time I've ever done that in that category. True Blood delivered its reliable awesomeness but this past week Torchwood was undeniably impressive as well. Speaking of ties, my Webisode of the Week title is a shared honor this time. If you don't like one of the entries, perhaps you'll like the other. ABC-Family and TV Land split the spoils in the Summer Sitcoms section, a fairly common occurrence in recent months, and, my Reality Shows category welcomes some unexpected additions that even surprised me.
As mentioned last column, I'm lacking a decent list of premiere and finale dates so you'll just have to check my daily TV forum polls to learn what might be starting or ending in the upcoming week. One show I'm really looking forward to is tonight's Alphas (Monday, August 22nd @ 10/9c) on Syfy, most notably because Summer Glau is guesting!
I now happily present my favorite shows from last week...

Though I missed a few shows I'd intended to catch, I still watched forty-one and a half hours of primetime TV to assemble this column; twenty-one hours of scripted drama. In this hotly competitive week both the "Boiler Room" and "Grave Danger" jobs from Leverage just missed my Scripted List, as did Eureka, Warehouse 13, and The Glades. The only sitcoms I watched that didn't make my comedy list were A.N.T. Farm and both new episodes of Melissa & Joey. This was the first week I ever watched Melissa & Joey and I like it a lot, it's funny. Celebrity Close Calls, Ancient Aliens, UnSung, Flipping Out, and, What Not to Wear (guest starring Jenny McCarthy & Cheryl Burke) all ride the Reality Shows bench this time out.

Guest actors making it super-difficult to choose this week's honoree included Daniele Favilli (on Torchwood: Miracle Day), Sasha Behar (on Strike Back), Huey Lewis (on Hot in Cleveland), Neil Grayston (on Warehouse 13), and Alaina Huffman (on Alphas).

In case you haven't seen it yet there's only a few days left to experience Glee: The 3D Concert Movie before it leaves theaters. Also in theaters currently are genre remakes, Conan the Barbarian & Fright Night.

Check out a complete list of all shows watched for this week's column here.

You may've noticed my title bump to Entertainment Editor? Well, one of my highest priorities now is to recruit new writers for the Outhouse's expanding entertainment division. We're especially looking for someone to write an entertainment news of the day (or week) type column; movie, tv, music news, casting rumors, and the like. If you're interested in filling this plumb role let me know.

It's been an unexpectedly busy weekend for me, so I'm gonna wrap it up here. Be Well & Happy Viewing!
