TV Week in Review
(week of 3/4/12)

Last week ABC Family, NBC, HBO, AMC, H2, and The Science Channel rose above the rest, dominating their various categories. Interesting to note, at least to me, is the fact that Disney's Jessie earned placement on my Favorite Teen Shows list for the first time ever and it's also the week in which I watched my first episode of The Mentalist ever. I didn't deliberately boycott The Mentalist all this time, it's just a coincidence of fate that it's always aired against other shows I've followed. Although it didn't make my hour-long list this viewing, I discovered it's a show I'll start watching from now on. It should also be mentioned that The Walking Dead earned Top of the List honors for a second week in a row (its first two weeks atop my drama list).

Thanks to this handy list from IGN, I can gladly report that Fashion Star (Tues. 3/13), South Park and Ugly Americans (both Wed. 3/14), Community and Ashley Judd's Missing (both Thurs. 3/15), as well as, USA dramas Fairly Legal and In Plain Sight (both Friday 3/16) all premiere this week. I've been waiting for most of these premieres for months so I'm pretty excited about them. This Saturday (3/17) Adrian Pasdar & Amy Huberman star in The Hallmark Channel's latest original movie, Chasing Leprechauns. Score Coming Soon stickers for Chasing Leprechauns and Fashion Star from GetGlue by clicking their titles in this sentence. BTW, Fairly Legal is currently offering a Preview Premiere OnDemand allowing cable subscribers with VOD access to see the season opener early. Check it out, it's easily one of my favorite epis from that series so far.
Now onto my preferred picks from primetime TV last week....

Trivia Question of the Week: With Megan Mullally, Sean Hayes and Debra Messing all appearing on primetime shows last week it made one former-partner's absence all the more glaring. Can you name the (absent) kid doing his own thing - or - the past series these thesps were castmates with that 'kid' on?

This past week saw an uptick in hours viewed from last week's total of forty-one to a new total of forty-four and a half. Drama series comprised twenty-three and a half hours viewed, while sitcoms and reality fare collectively account for twenty-one hours of that forty-four and a half hour total. Happily, I managed to see every show I'd intended for the week, certainly something of a rarity.
GCB, Justified, Lost Girl, Breakout Kings and Desperate Housewives complete my list of favorite hour-long shows from last week (in order). Comedies Are You There, Chelsea?, Happy Endings, Happily Divorced, The Simpsons and New Girl round out my Outstanding Sitcoms list in another week wherein all teen shows screened placed on my Favorite Teen Shows list. Earning Honorable Mentions for my Reality Shows list are Ice Loves Coco, Through the Wormhole, UnSung, Project Runway All-Stars: After the Runway and American Chopper: Sr. vs. Jr.

My liberal list of favorite guest stars numbered twenty but my Top 12 list only adds Nikki Deloach (on Ringer), Frank Whaley (on Alcatraz), Jason Sudeikis (on Eastbound & Down), Helena Bonham Carter (on Life's Too Short), Amy Acker (on Once Upon A Time), Morgan Fairchild (on Happily Divorced), Mamie Gummer (on The Good Wife) and Richard Bryant (on Army Wives).

With many long-cherished fairy tales being retold and modernized of late, I have to tip my hat to the latest web trailer for Mirror Mirror titled, "Social Queen." It's a truly fun and witty look at how the Snow White tale could play out if driven primarily by social media. I like it a lot. (Premiering March 30th)

Last week FEARnet scored an exclusive trailer from Lionsgate Horror for Joss Whedon's The Cabin in the Woods (opening 4/13). Behold the exciting clip below and make sure to read FEARnet's "gushing" spoiler-free review of the film here.

Speaking of Whedon, FYI, I've been refraining from posting many rumors or spoilers about The Avengers on purpose. Reading this recent quote from Joss about what he'd like to do with the inevitable sequel, however, couldnt've pleased me more. I'll continue my policy of not sharing spoilers but considering the hypothetical nature of his comment in this instance I figured it was worth passing along this link for those as curious as I was.

Disney's upcoming actioner, The Lone Ranger, may not have a site up yet but an official photo hit the web last week (3/8) that grabbed the attention of Depp fans everywhere. In the pic Johnny and Armie Hammer appear in costume as The Lone Ranger and his trusted companion, Tonto.

Last year I wrote of the Canadian Star Wars exhibit making American fans so jealous, titled Star Wars Identities: The Exhibition. Thursday (3/8) six fantastic new posters for the exhibit debuted, and I wholeheartedly suggest SW fans take a look at them here. Which is your favorite? I think if I had to pick one it'd be the Stormtrooper. Just in case you haven't seen it before, you can see the trailer for Star Wars Identities: The Exhibition here.

This WiR's GetGlue report has a lot of new stickers to share. I've already mentioned the new TV glue (in this column's opening) but I also unlocked nearly twenty other stickers you can get at the following links. Firstly, for three 2012 films I hadn't yet heard of, glue can be got by checking-in to [REC] 3: Genesis, V/H/S and Dreama Walker's Compliance. Coming Soon stickers are also available for To The Arctic (4/20), The Pirates (4/27), The Five-Year Engagement (4/27) and God Bless America (OnDemand 4/6, in theaters 5/11). Music stickers you may want include ones for Johnny Cash's "Bootleg Vol. IV" (4/3), Carlos Santana's upcoming (5/2) gig at House of Blues Las Vegas, Hot Chelle Rae (for album "Whatever!"), Chris Young (for album "Neon"), Romeo Santos (in support of his tour), Outasight (for their single "Tonight is the Night") and Diggy (for his album, "Unexpected Arrival," debuting 3/20).
I only found three Marvel stickers last week but they're three pretty cool ones: Avengers Academy #27, X-Men #25 and Venom #14.

Before signing off I wanted to tell you about a couple of exciting new TV stories I think you'll want to know about. I've written before about former supermodel Beverly Johnson's upcoming reality series, Beverly's Full House, on OWN. Last week a sneak peek clip hit revealing the first episode's first five minutes - check it out.
Beverly's Full House premieres 3/31 @ 10/9c.

And lastly, basketball legend Magic Johnson announced last week he'll be launching a new TV network in June called, Aspire TV. Read a detailed press release about Magic's network here and make sure to folllow Aspire TV on twitter.

Thanks for taking the time to read my weekly commentary and I hope I've brought something worthwhile to your attention. If not, perhaps you can find something more to your liking in either my Music Video or iTV columns also published here weekly. I write less commentary in the other columns but I'm proud of the diverse range of artistic, thought provoking material I pass along each week in them. Please check back again next week and in the meantime Have a Great Week & Happy Viewing!
