The Outhouse invites you to check out Being Bold by Zorica Tomic and Rasheed Whalen.
Hello there, readers! Welcome to the first edition of Kickstart My Heart, a new feature here on the Outhouse where we'll talk to the creators of some self-published and crowdfunded projects so that we can help make people aware of some the great stuff already out there or being created currently that doesn't make the mainstream news cycle.
First up is Being Bold, an Indiegogo project by Zorica Tomic and Rasheed Whalen. They're looking to raise $5500 to produce their book. Below, you'll find more info on the creators, as well as some preview pages. We also chatted with Zorica about the project. You can check out the Indiegogo page here.
Zorica Tomic is an illustrator and graphic designer. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, and certificates from School of Graphic Arts- Belgrade, Yugoslavia. She has worked as a volunteer for various Youth Groups on the East Coast, and had taught art to at-risk teenagers for the Sasha Bruce Youthwork. Earning her a "Volunteer of the year" award and write up.
Born in the former Yugoslavia, Zorica came to America in her early teens due to interest in her work as an artist, and has been living in the United States ever since.
Rasheed Whalen is an illustrator and graphic designer from Philadelphia. He studied art in Maryland and has worked as a freelance artist on the East Coast for the last ten years. His passion has always been comics, and he hopes to someday break into the business.
What is Being Bold about?
Essentially it follows the common "awkward teenager develops super abilities" comic book archetype but it diverges into a different territory as the story develops. The main theme being that a hero truly is what you make it. That this teen thinks he needs to be this character the media has dubbed "Bold" to deal with these omnipresent threats that the teen himself is responsible for causing, but it's all a matter of perspective. His geeky teenage body in the right place at the right time, can have all the power of Hercules...in the right context. I think there will be some interesting surprises for anyone who reads through the first issue.
The story itself has got a sort of dark humor to it, as well as a lot of action. I wanted to tell a compelling story and have it be very active. I love monsters and epic battles. So the challenge was creating a story that wasn't superficial while throwing in a lot of visual eye candy. A major part of the story doesn't take place on Earth at all.
Is this the first comic you've written, or do you have any other work our readers can check out?
This is the first.
What about the artist, Rasheed Whalen? His work is pretty polished. What has he worked on before?
Nothing official, just a few pinups and minor stuff here and there with some independent publishers.
This is the first full book he's had the opportunity to do. I think hopefully other publishers will take notice of his talents after this.
You're looking to raise $5500 on Indiegogo. What does the money go toward?
A professional colorist to finish the pencil and inked pages.A professional letterer to letter the comics. Money to pay the artist as well as cover publishing, materials, shipping, and other costs.
Everything will go into getting this series off the ground. We need all the help we can get at this point.
What do readers get for pledging to your Indiegogo campaign?
T-shirts, wallpaper, posters, a digital and signed hard copy of the comic, even actual pages from the book itself.
If we can think or make anything else along the way when this thing gets started we'll throw that in too!
We want to make it fun and worthwhile to pledge because we believe in this book, so hopefully these efforts will be worthwhile.
