Somewhere over Middle America, an elderly couple found a ship with an infant child inside. They decided to take it home with them, and look after it. Soon after, their farmhouse was surrounded by US government agents and helicopters. The infant and ship were taken into US custody.
After extensive tests it appeared that the baby was developing different abilities, such has impenetrable skin and strength, that only seemed to be getting stronger as the days went by. The government decided to raise the child on their own, making him the ultimate American, with hopes of turning him into a weapon. The government assigned two agents to the child to be his parents. They would be in charge or raising and educating the boy. The undertaking was called Project: Hyperion.
After testing the space ship, it was found to be releasing small amounts of an unknown retrovirus. It would later be linked to others developing special abilities. As time went on, Mark Milton's powers developed at an alarming rate. He accidentally used his flash vision to reduce a small puppy to ashes in front of his parents' eyes. He could see into houses miles away. He knew he was different; and he slowly figured out he was being used by the US government. He broke ties with the government and asked to be left alone. The government panicked, and recruited a team to take down Hyperion.
After a brief battle, the group time-jumps and Hyperion sees the results of his actions: a world that he rulers. They then jump back to the present and Hyperion agrees to join the government’s super army.

In the comics, Angela is an angel who acts opposite Spawn as a bounty hunter working under the auspices of Heaven. She attempted to kill Spawn upon their first meeting, but he managed to defeat her despite her significantly greater experience. When he later came to her aid during her trial in Heaven. Ironically, he was there to testify that she had permission to attempt to kill him - they started a relationship. Angela was killed during the battle with Malebolgia in Spawn #100.
In 1993 McFarlane contracted Neil Gaiman (as well as other recognized authors like Frank Miller and Dave Sim) to write one issue of Spawn. While doing so, Gaiman introduced the characters Angela, Cogliostro, and Medieval Spawn. All three characters continued to be featured prominently in the series after Gaiman's involvement, and had many tie-ins with McFarlane's toy company. Cogliostro had a prominent role in the live-action movie in 1997. McFarlane had initially agreed that Gaiman retained creator rights on the characters, but later claimed that Gaiman's work had been work-for-hire and that McFarlane owned all of Gaiman's creations entirely, pointing to the legal indicial in Spawn #9 and the lack of legal contract stating otherwise. (Some argued that this change of heart was motivated by his desire to gain full ownership to the characters by using Miracleman as a bargaining tool.) McFarlane had also refused to pay Gaiman for the volumes of Gaiman's work he republished and kept in print. In 2002, Gaiman filed suit and won a sizeable judgment against McFarlane and Image Comics for the rights due any creator. All three characters are currently co-owned 50/50 by both men.

One of three natural human immortals, Gilad is the brother of Ivar the Timewalker and Aram the Other (AKA Armstrong). The three brothers are the only naturally immortal humans known to exist. He serves as the "Fist and Steel" of the Geomancers and has served them for millennia. Like his brothers, Gilad has superhuman strength (though not as great as Aram's) and stamina, as well as a healing ability, which allows him to regenerate virtually any wound. Gilad's people once said that he carried within him the "Leopard Spirit."
Bravest of a warrior tribe, Gilad Anni-Padda was born in 3268 BC. His skill at battle craft and the arts of stealth are great, as he has honed them throughout the ages. With an ultra-dense cellular structure that gives him great strength and the ability to heal from the most grievous of wounds, Gilad Anni-Padda is even immune to the ravages of time. The greatest fighter from an age when the sword was the law, he was ancient before the rise of the Pharaohs, and shall survive the fall of nations yet to come. He is the Fist and Steel of those who guard the Earth - the Geomancers, and his battle is never-ending.
In 3257 BC, at the age of eleven, Gilad emerged victorious from his first battle. In 3250, Gilad's first son, Kalam, was born. In 3219 BC, Gilad and Aram battled the superior weaponry of the Mesopotamians and lost. Later the warriors of Mesopotamia attacked Gilad's village. All of the villagers were killed with the exception of Gilad, Aram, and Kalam. The brothers split up, Gilad traveling with the Geomancer of the day and Aram seeking a new family and a less violent life. Centuries passed and the brothers saw each other on occasion but have largely led separate lives.
In 210 BC, Gilad first battled the Immortal Enemy, then known as General Cheng, who can reincarnate through the ages, always seeking Gilad's destruction. Every time the Immortal Enemy reincarnates his eyes remain the same, one green and the other brown. In World War II, Gilad meets Neville Alcott at the Battle of Dunkirk in 1940. Alcott would later serve to aid the Eternal Warrior's causes.
In the early 1990's, Gilad (now known as Gilad Abrams) fought the Immortal Enemy's latest incarnation, a Colombian drug lord Juan Javier Caldone. Gilad has also incurred the enmity of Master Darque - necromancer supreme. During the Unity crisis it is seen that Gilad will still be active in 4000 A.D., battling alongside Magnus, Robot Fighter.
