Nightfly's TV Week in Review 12/11/11 - Boardwalk Empire, Brad Meltzer's Decoded, and more!

Nightfly lists his preferred picks from primetime TV and the world of entertainment.

TV Week in Review  (week of 12/11/11)

With so many shows on holiday break, the way was made for a few delightful suprises in this edition. Though the shortage of new shows left a couple list holes (specifically in the Favorite Teen Shows section again), I believe I covered the loss with the addition of a couple extra bonus videos at this column's close. I also decided to add a new highly-irregular individual honor - I'm unsure will ever be so partitioned again - for Cameo of the Week as a sibling title to Guest Star of the Week. When you see who my inaugural honoree is I'm sure you'll understand why I had to let the heroic, intergalactic superstar win - even if he only appeared on camera for less than half a minute.
This week I begin a new practice of including a couple GetGlue links for pages I specifically oversee (er, "Guru"). None of the pages I manage offer stickers but since I dedicate a fair amount of attention to the 115 pages I currently Guru there, I thought it'd be fun (at least for me) to share a couple each week here in my columns.

Regular viewers of Boardwalk Empire surely aren't surprised that its sophomore season finale claims this installment's Top of the List title. AMC's western drama Hell on Wheels earns a shout-out for making its first list appearance in my column since premiering. Colm Meaney and Wes Studi are two of my all-time favorite actors so believe me when I say HoW is a series I sincerely enjoy.
CBS deserves a nod for again being the only Big Three network to grace my main scripted list - a position its not unused to filling. The Tiffany Network makes two additional appearances, alongside FOX and TV Land, in my Outstanding Sitcoms category which is, for a second consecutive week, owned by the ever-unruly Beavis & Butt-Head. The History Channel continues making WiR history by topping my Reality Shows list a respectable fifth straight week in a row.

I know of no shows debuting this upcoming week, so, I'll just proceed to my preferred picks from last week's primetime lineup...

* Bonus News: Back when the fourth season of Torchwood became America's first season of Torchwood: Miracle Day, a so-called "web series" came out alongside it titled, Web of Lies, starring genre-fave Eliza Dushku. While Web of Lies was, indeed, on the web and serialized, it was much more of a puzzle-game motion comic than what I typically feature in my columns as web series. To the best of my knowledge, there was no way for me to feature/embed those "webisodes" here. Cut to today, and the "complete dvd version" can now be downloaded here (I'm pretty sure its not a pirate site, I read about it here via twitter). Enjoy.

Trivia Question of the Week: Acclaimed thesps Wes Studi and Colm Meaney combined to help Hell on Wheels claim its first scripted list placement this week. In the early 1990s they shared credits in an award-winning film co-starring current Revenge vixen Madeleine Stowe. Can you name it?  [answered]

So few shows aired last week that my grand total dropped ten hours off last week's number, maxing out at thirty-seven and a half hours; twenty-two of those hours spent solely on hour-long fare. The only show I meant to see but didn't was G4's Bomb Patrol: Afghanistan (the "Teamwork" episode). Out of the hour-long programs I watched, Burn Notice, Person of Interest, Once Upon a Time, The Good Wife and NCIS were the most impressive ones that didn't make my list. For a second consecutive week too few teen shows aired to fill out my Favorite Teen Shows section, however, The Simpsons, Beavis & Butt-Head, the Christmas episode of Shake It Up, I Hate My Teenage Daughter and Two and a Half Men all claim honorable mentions from my Outstanding Sitcoms category. Reality shows just missing list honorifics include The Mortified Sessions (featuring Will Forte and Jennifer Grey), Project Accessory and Top Chef: Texas.

Guest stars rounding out my list of last week's favorites include Barry Corbin (on The Closer), Wes Studi (on Hell on Wheels), Justin Long (on New Girl), Bijou Phillips (on Raising Hope), Bridget Regan (on Person of Interest), and, the couple of Jason Priestley & Jennifer Finnigan on Psych.

Even though Psych's mid-season finale earned placement on my main scripted list, I wanted to share its Coming Back clip now since I already can't wait for February.

HBO's Enlightened concluded its freshman season last week. I really appreciated this unusually thoughtful series and loved the season finale episode most of all. There's still no word regarding a Season 2 renewal, but fans such as myself are anxiously keeping our fingers crossed. Watch the last Inside the Episode for Enlightened this season (below).
Ep.10 - Inside the Episode

Also from HBO, the first official teaser trailer for Game of Thrones' second season titled, "The Cold Winds Are Rising."

Of the many new posters and trailers released last week the ones I enjoyed the most were for action and sci-fi movies (surprise, surprise). The first official trailer for Men in Black III is very promising, and, the first sequel in the blockbuster franchise G.I. Joe (starring The Rock) delivered a trailer that's guaranteed to grab your attention. Read more about the new MIB trailer here. Sly Stallone served up a combo of treats last week, with a new teaser trailer and poster for Expendables 2 as well as a first-look image of his upcoming actioner Bullet to the Head. Do yourself a favor and investigate the entertaining trailers linked above.
Personally, being a fan of Ghost Rider's since his first appearance on a bike (way back in 1972), there's no doubt my favorite new poster & trailer from last week were both for Nic Cage's molten hot Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Ghost Rider
This is the most awesome trailer I've seen for a long time!!

Wednesday (12/21) the eagerly anticipated fourth installment of Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible franchise hits theaters, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Last week this 3:48 clip titled, "Sandstorm Chase" hit the net, filling out a scene prolifically teased in every GP trailer so far. After you've screened the suspenseful clip (below), check out Tiesto's remix [video] of Lalo Schifrin's classic M:i theme here (you can also view its dynamic video in my Music Video Week in Review column too). FTR, I couldn't stop from shouting, "MORTAL KOMBAT!!", multiple times throughout my first hearing of it.

* read more about it here.

I'll close out this column with some links to GetGlue stickers I unlocked last week but before listing those I also wanted to share the latest D23's Disney Geek video which I warmly recommend watching here.
Now to the glue... fans of Zoe Saldana can earn this explosively hot sticker by celebrating Colombiana's Blu-ray release with a check-in here. The only other movie sticker I earned promotes a film I'm eagerly looking forward to, coming in April 2012, titled The Lucky One (starring the beautiful Taylor Schilling & Zac Efron).
Marvel came through, as they do each Wednesday, with new glue - this time for Avengers Vs. X-Men, Carnage, U.S.A. and Avengers: X-Sanction.

On a last GetGlue note,... I'm a so-called Guru for many pages there and will now, from time to time, invite my readers to check-in to certain pages I oversee. In my weekly hunt for new glue, I've developed an affinity for (what I call) Suggestion Surfing. Whenever I check-in to a page I make sure to peruse that page's Suggestions to see if there's any other cool stuff there to discover. Just yesterday I found a page there, I never knew existed, for the Kobayashi Maru. Anyway, two pages I supervise that I'd love my friends to check-in to are for groundbreaking supermodel-businesswoman Beverly Johnson, and, Cruise's fictional agent Ethan Hunt of the Impossible Missions Force.
Beverly has been a kind twitter friend and longtime inspiration, and just launched a new line of beauty products which are all 15% off through December 31st. Take a look at her enticing wares and get educated about her high-fashion legacy (at her official site here) before her new series, Beverly's Full House, debuts on OWN in February.
