Chasing The Matrix:

Nightfly's Music Video Week in Review  (week of 12/11/11)

I've only been doing this music column for a few months so I had little idea of the effect the holiday season would have on new video releases (beyond the obvious inclusion of new Christmas themed songs). Well, pretty similar to TV, it had a decidedly chilly effect on the number of new releases, yielding the smallest batch I've had to choose from yet. I've been tentatively planning, ever since starting this new column, selections from my personal VEVO playlist if pickings ever got too slim; well, it didn't get quite that bad but I did embed a track from my personal playlist (for a different reason). One thing for sure, there's no shortage of Christmas tracks in this WiR edition so hopefully you're in the proper holiday spirit.

Readers of my TV column know I'm a fan of the Disney Channel's entertaining teen sitcom, A.N.T. Farm. One of the show's stars, fifteen year old Stefanie Scott, released a video of her covering Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." Way back in May, well before I started publishing my music video week in review, I featured Stefanie's charming video for her hit single, "Girl I Used to Know" - enjoy it again below.

Before moving onto my picks for this week's column, one featuring new releases from Kelly Clarkson, will.i.am, Mariah Carey & John Legend, a new version of the Mission: Impossible theme by Tiesto and more, I wanted to share an insightful interview vid from one of my favorite musical legends of all-time, Nile Rodgers. Rodgers was one of the first musical heroes of mine to follow me back on twitter and even check-in just to say "hi" every so often. Nile's daily blog Walking on Planet C, in which he chronicles his ongoing battle against cancer, has become inspirational daily reading for me. Last week Nile sat down to be interviewed by the BBC, check out the complete interview below.

Beavis & Butt-Head Section:
This section is for videos that I wouldn't necessarily include otherwise, but within a comedic context I find them perfect fodder for mockery. See what B&B would have to work with, if interested, by clicking the link below. Just one for this section this week.

"Pelican" by The Maccabees  {released 12/13 via VEVO}

New Holiday Video Releases:
"Christmas With My Girl" by Mindless Behavior  {released 12/14 via VEVO}

"Christmastime" by Kari Kimmel  {released via ABC-Family}

* you can also hear it here.

"Fa La La (a cappella)" by Justin Bieber (feat. Boyz II Men)  {released 12/14 via VEVO}

* Relive the Christmas magic of the original version here.

"Last Christmas" by GRAFFITI6  {released 12/15 via VEVO}

"When Christmas Comes" by Mariah Carey & John Legend  {released 12/16 via VEVO}

Two lovely singers, former TV contestants both, that graciously follow me on twitter have new Christmas singles out now on iTunes. Jes Hudak (finalist on Bravo's Platinum Hit) offers a beautiful rendition of "Silent Night," featured alongside tracks by other independent artists in a holiday classics collection titled, Feliz Christmas. And fans of American Idol and/or Dreamgirls won't want to miss owning gorgeous Syesha Mercado's new seasonal single, "Christmas Melody," available at iTunes here.

Bonus Video:
Since this column reflects a week with fewer new releases than usual, I decided to close it out with a bonus video from my personal VEVO playlist. Just this evening I became a GetGlue guru for teen triple-threat Bella Thorne. Best known for acting and dancing on Disney's Shake It Up, this past summer Thorne proved she has a singing future ahead of her too with this especially vivacious video for her and Zendaya's dance track, "Watch Me." Bella & Zendaya will inarguably be around, making music in particular, for a long time to come. Check out their video (below).

Thanks for your continuing interest in this music-centric column, Have a Great Holiday Week & Keep Your Groove On!
