Nightfly's Music Video Week in Review  (week of 12/18/11)

I had no idea what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised at the ample amount of new music videos released last week. This column features multiple holiday videos and runner-up honorees, one make-up clip that should've appeared in my previous column, a derivative but successful Video of the Week winner, and two bonus vids from my own VEVO playlist as my personal Christmas gifts to you.

I'm only spotlighting one out-of-competition video in this entry, a typically poignant track from legendary songwriting poet Leonard Cohen.
"Show Me The Place" by Leonard Cohen  {released 12/23 via VEVO}

It's Christmas today and we all have stuff to do so I'll get right to it.

It begins  (in alphabetical order, except for the winners)....
* Warning: videos below may contain mature content not suitable for all ages *

"Anna Calvi" by Anna Calvi  {released 12/20 via VEVO}

Bonus Videos:
To close out this column I want to celebrate a victory for "Weird Al" Yankovic and leave you with a personal message from me about the holidays.

Firstly, fans of Chris Hardwick surely caught his The Nerdist: Year in Review show last nite on BBC-America, on which "Weird Al" won Chris' highly coveted Nerdist of the Year Award. To help commemorate that righteous victory (yes, I'm a "Weird Al" nerd myself) I'm re-spotlighting the last Yankovic video I featured in a Week in Review column, back before I even had a weekly Music Video column. As a longtime "Weird Al" fan, his mashups were always my favorites and this one showcases particularly comedic instrumentation (gotta love the Tuba-Banjo combination).
"Polka Face" by "Weird Al" Yankovic

And lastly, on a less comedic note, time with family can be precious but some family can also delight in pushing uncomfortable buttons or turning what should be a time of joy into a time of personal criticism. Maybe it's because this year you don't have bangs, or a job, or someone doesn't dig your tattoo, or significant other... whatever the case may be, those are the types of people that drive up the annual holiday statistics for suicide, drug abuse, and the like. If, like me, you come from a family that makes you crazy, please remember that no one knows your heart or inner-self better than you. There will always be folks ready to criticize and condemn the rare few that stand out or dare stick their heads up, but there will also always be those, like me and the following artist, that make it their priority to remind you you're perfect just the way you are right now.
"Who Says" by Selena Gomez & The Scene

Merry Christmas, Have a Great Holiday Week & Keep Your Groove On!
