Nightfly's TV Week in Review 1/15/12 - Fringe, Modern Family, and more!

Nightfly lists his preferred picks from primetime TV and the world of entertainment.

TV Week in Review
  (week of 1/15/12)

Hello, it's been awhile. You may've noticed I haven't published a column since December but I'm back this week, with both columns, and I'm ready to showcase some shows. By the way, I noticed in assembling this week's edition that several shows listed below are currently viewable free either at hulu or on their parent network sites.
Based on my selections this outing FOX, NBC, ABC, and Nickelodeon ruled assorted categories, though, no network slotted twice on my Reality Shows list.
Tonight (1/23) look out for the season premieres of Bad Girls Club (on Oxygen) and Skins (on E4). Tomorrow (Tues 1/24) Monster Bug Wars returns to the Science Channel for a second season, and, Saturday (1/28) Luke Perry stars in the Hallmark Channel's original movie premiere of Goodnight For Justice: The Measure Of A Man.
Now without delay onto my preferred picks from last week's primetime TV....

It didn't happen all at once, but as January unfolded more and more series made their way(s) back to primetime with new episodes. Last week my total hours viewed, related to column competition, numbered forty-three and a half -- twenty-four of those hours applied to hour-long scripted dramas specifically. I unfortunately missed two series I'd intended to watch (2 Broke Girls and The Game), and, though not pertinent to my WiR column I also made sure not to miss last week's audition episodes of American Idol.

Of the twenty-four dramas screened for WiR assessment, CSI, Desperate Housewives, Pan Am, Jane by Design, and the American debut of Canada's Lost Girl all earn this edition's hour-long Honorable Mentions.
On the humorous side, Hot in Cleveland, New Girl, Raising Hope, The Exes and Are You There, Chelsea? all ride the pine for my Outstanding Sitcoms section. Too few teen shows aired to produce a honorable mentions list.
Barely missing my Reality Shows list were new epis of UnSung, The Mortified Sessions and two episodes each from Swanderosa and Oddities.

Extraordinary guest performances standing out amongst last week's fare included Jason Biggs (on The Good Wife), Derek Webster (on Castle), Ashley Greene (on Pan Am), Leon Rippy (on Leverage) and Chris Elliott (on How I Met Your Mother).

As a big fan of The Voice, I was interested to see last week's behind the scenes video of Carson Daly giving a sneak peek at Season Two. The wait is nearly over as NBC's The Voice premieres February 5th.

* Read about it here.

Former 'V-Correspondent' Alison Haislip unveiled a first trailer for her upcoming original Hulu series debuting this Valentine's Day titled, Battleground. The internet sitcom will be free on regular Hulu and in brilliant HD on Hulu Plus. Screen Battleground's political trailer here.

FYI, the curtain officially rises on NBC's Smash February 6th but savvy fans can find it OnDemand now from your local cable provider or download it for free on iTunes. In Smash musical theater fans have been given a true gift.

GetGlue has Coming Soon stickers for tonite's Bad Girls Club and E4's Skins premieres, and, sometime before Saturday make sure to unlock their sticker promoting Luke Perry's new Hallmark Channel movie, Goodnight For Justice: The Measure Of A Man. In case you haven't snagged it yet, there's still time to grab the sticker for the recent DVD and Blu-ray release of Friends with Benefits (starring Timberlake & Kunis).
Here are some cool Coming Soon stickers you can get just for watching these films' trailers (listed in order of b.o. release): Big Miracle, Safe House, Casa De Mi Padre (starring Will Ferrell), Wrath Of The Titans, Rock Of Ages, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and, Bryan Singer's Jack The Giant Killer.

The new trailer that intrigued me most last week was for Resident Evil: Retribution (narrated by Sir Patrick Stewart OBE). RE:R is currently scheduled for a September 14th US release date.

* Read about it here.

Patrick Stewart fans, such as myself, seriously value and honor his personally driven, ongoing work as Patron of UK charity Refuge. Refuge combats domestic violence against women and children by offering safe havens and services to help families heal and move on from their attackers. Please take a few minutes to watch the following clip, hosted by Sir Patrick, highlighting the good work Refuge does to counteract the too-often-hidden scourge of domestic violence against women and children.

Turning towards a decidely more whistful subject, how about a first look (in English) at the magical festivities planned for Disneyland Paris' upcoming 20th Anniversary. The only Disney park I've visited is Disneyland in Anaheim, but who among us wouldn't want to be in Paris for this awesome party Disney is planning? Check out the preview (below) and read more about the events beginning April 1st here.

I'm going to close out my first column of 2012 with some GetGlue links from Marvel Comics, but, one last video (actually a year old by now) I really encourage friends to see came to me via tweet about 36hrs ago (from @TEDConf). Titled "Lessons From Fashion's Free Culture", the clip features Johanna Blakley talking about the issue of Intellectual Property rights everyone from artists to business people should know. I was amazed at how relevant and informative this 15min clip proved to be. I urge you to take a few minutes and check it out here - I bet the info Johanna delivers will impress and/or inspire you.

As promised, here are some super-cool Marvel stickers I've unlocked in the past couple weeks. Check-in to these GG pages and get glue for the following books: Avengers #21 (featuring Storm), Wolverine #300 (featuring Sabretooth), Scarlet Spider #1 and Captain America.

I hope you all enjoyed your Winter break as much as I did. Join me again next week for my next TV Week in Review and please check out my weeky new Music Video column as well. Have a Great Week and Happy Viewing!
