Nightfly's TV Week in Review 2/12/12 - Nikita, 30 Rock, and more!

Written by Nightfly on Monday, February 20 2012 and posted in Features

Nightfly lists his preferred picks from primetime TV and the world of entertainment.

TV Week in Review  (week of 2/12/12)

In the most heavily-programmed week of the new year my teen category once again fell short of filling all five of its slots. Unlike last week two networks double slotted on my hour-long drama list and neither was FOX; this time ABC and The CW placed twice on that list. NBC, ABC and FOX divvied up my sitcoms section, though only NBC garnered triple placement and that category's top spot. The History Channel and Science Channel took two slots each in my reality section with Science reclaiming the top spot after briefly losing it to BBC-America.
In this WiR I've begun adding parenthesis around the numbers for shows currently free online. Of course some videos only stay up a couple weeks but from on now I'll make sure to indicate which shows you can view online the week each column gets published.
Premieres pending this week (of 2/19) include Ghost Hunters International (Wednesday 2/22 on Syfy), Lifeguard! (Thursday 2/23 on The Weather Channel) and the series four premiere of Being Human (Saturday 2/25 on BBC-America). And make sure not to miss the 84th Annual Academy Awards airing next Sunday (2/26).
Before sharing my picks from last week I want to invite you to also check out my new iTV Week in Review column debuting this week. Let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions for any of my weekly columns. Thanks.

Apparently CBS has stopped making Person of Interest available online the same week it airs which is why I've missed it the past couple weeks. I guess I'll have to start recording it or something. The only other show I meant to watch last week but missed was AMC's Talking Dead, yet I did see TWD. Just because I missed its parent show shouldn't prevent me from sharing Talking Dead's aftershow (with Executive Producer Glen Mazzara and musician Dave Navarro) so I embedded it anyway.

I watched more hours of primetime TV last week than in any other week this year. My grand total was fifty-one hours viewed; twenty-eight and a half of those spent solely on hour-long dramas (plus House of Lies). From that sizeable pool of dramas, Switched at Birth, The Walking Dead, Hart of Dixie, Ringer and the series premiere of Stephen Hawking Sci Fi Masters ride the pine for my drama category. Are You There, Chelsea?, 2 Broke Girls, The Big Bang Theory, HIMYM and Two and a Half Men all earned Honorable Mentions as Outstanding Sitcoms, while, among Reality Shows screened Project Runway: All-Stars, Face Off, Oddities, Top Chef: Texas and Ink Master just missed making my list.

In such a densely programmed week it's no wonder more thesps than usual competed for my Guest Star of the Week honor. Nearly earning Runner Up rank were Jeff Goldblum (on Glee), Ryan Kwanten (on New Girl), Lili Simmons (on Jane by Design), Becki Newton (on How I Met Your Mother) and Steve Buscemi (on 30 Rock).

Last week these two TV oriented vids most grabbed my attention. HBO's Making of Game of Thrones webisode titled, "Working as an Extra" and beneath that, an early look at the Pilot for drama series Awake (starring Jason Isaacs and Laura Allen). If you'd rather wait till Awake officially premieres on-air, you'll be seeing it debut March 1st on NBC.

Making Game of Thrones: Working as an Extra

These days so many movie clips hit the web weekly it's become difficult to pick which to feature in these columns. This week I'm spotlighting three BTS featurettes (one with an unexpected and unorthodox intro) and a first look trailer online thanks to foreign media. Since it's already in theaters, I chose to start with a raucous featurette from Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Check it out (below) and read about it here.

* MovieWeb has a cool set of exclusive interviews with the cast viewable here.

Tim Burton gave fans a couple Valentine's Day presents in the form of a new BTS featurette and an intro he recorded for a different BTS-trailer originally unveiled at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum last Friday. The unintroduced clip is embedded below, you can read about and view the introduced clip here.

Valentine's Day also delivered a first look at Erica Durance's Italian-made thriller, Gemelle. Take a look at its captivating trailer (below).

The day after V-Day brought ashore a new Battleship clip featuring director Peter Berg discussing the U.S. Navy and Marines' close involvement with the sci-fi actioner. Battleship hits screens May 18th.

I'll close this installment out with a batch of new GetGlue links that might interest you. First, some Coming Soon stickers for Game of Thrones (returning 4/1) and films Friends With Kids (3/9) and Mirror Mirror (premiering 3/30). Marvel offered a hearty stash of new stickers last week including ones for Avenging Spider-Man #4, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man: Vol. 1 (HC), Amazing Spider-Man #679.1, Ultimate Comics X-Men #7, Venom #13.2 (featuring X-23) and Daredevil #9.

As always, thanks a bunch for checking out this column and I earnestly invite you to look at either of my other two columns as well. If you like 'em maybe share 'em with friend. Speaking of friends, if you live in the San Diego area think about coughing up the low subscription fee of $5/per month to add DogTV to your list of cable channels for 'Man's Best Friend.' Read about the newly launched canine-centric network here and watch an interesting video about it here. Between my three columns published today hopefully something struck your curiosity. I was a little surprised at how many cool new web series launched last week, so if you only check out one of my other columns, I'd encourage you to sample my inaugural iTV Week in Review. Have a Great Week and Happy Viewing!
