Nightfly lists his preferred picks from primetime TV and the world of entertainment.

TV Week in Review  (week of 2/26/12)

In a week with less new shows than the last, hit horror series The Walking Dead makes WiR history with its first #1 ranking, giving AMC its first top ranking in that category ever. ABC's The River also makes waves with its first appearance on my drama list, a slot earned primarily due to Eloise Mumford (Lone Star, Crash) in a compelling episode named after her character. No network slotted twice on this week's hour-long list, while, my teen list divided up predictably. HBO earned this entry's top two sitcom slots, though, NBC alone claimed three spots on said list. The Science Channel and Lifetime both garner double placement on my Reality Shows list, with Sci owning the top two slots thanks to two excellent episodes of An Idiot Abroad: The Bucket List and Prophets of Science Fiction.
If there are any big premieres coming this new week (starting today) I'm presently not aware of 'em.
Now without further ado, my preferred picks from last week's primetime TV...

Surprisingly, this WiR column's total hours viewed comes in more than seventeen hours shy of last week's total, with only forty-one hours viewed to compile this entry. Twenty-one of those forty-one hours were dedicated to drama series, thirteen were spent watching Reality TV and just under eight hours (counting The Clone Wars) was spent with half-hour sitcoms. The only show I intended to watch but missed was Monster Bug Wars.
Completing my Top 12 list of last week's favorite dramas were White Collar's season finale, tumultuous episodes of Jane by Design and Ringer, Lost Girl and lastly, a Kensi-centric tale from NCIS: L.A.
The back half of my favorite dozen sitcoms came in the form of Happy Endings, The Office, How I Met Your Mother, 30 Rock and Two and a Half Men. Like last week, every teen series screened made this column's teen shows list.
Talking Dead (with guest Kevin Smith), Top Shot, 24 Hour Catwalk, Ancient Aliens and Ink Master all earned Honorable Mentions for this edition's Reality Shows section.

Keeping in line with my recent Top 12 fomat, this WiR's complete favorite guest star list includes Becki Newton (on How I Met Your Mother), Aya Cash (on A Gifted Man), Susan Sarandon (on 30 Rock), Kathryn Hahn (on Parks and Recreation), James Caan (on Hawaii Five-0), Laura Harring (as Kensi's mom on NCIS: L.A.) and Catherine Tate (on The Office).

HBO's Game of Thrones didn't put out a Making Of webisode last week but they did release two new Season Two trailers. The first one, titled "Power and Grace" hit the web Sunday before last, and, the day before yesterday a new one came out titled, "Seven Devils." Click on the trailer titles to see the clips.

Erica Durance fans will be glad to learn that NBC has picked up her Canadian produced drama, Saving Hope, and'll be adding it to their summer primetime schedule. Read more about it here and follow Saving Hope on twitter for news 'n updates.

Though still over a month away, I seriously can't wait for Starz's series premiere of Magic City, coming April 6th. Take a look at its enticing preview trailer (below).

I'm pretty sure my regular readers have already seen it, but just in case you haven't, here's the newest official The Avengers trailer that reportedly snagged +17 million views in its first 24hrs online. Besides being an incredibly awesome and exciting preview, it's also the first glimpse I've gotten of Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill. The Avengers opens at a theater near you May 4th.

Last week's second most interesting trailer, imo, was the first official teaser for Tim Burton's Frankenweenie. Read about it here.

Poster-wise, I was most intrigued by the four-set of international one-sheets for Battleship that hit the web last week. Click here to check out shots of Liam Neeson, Rihanna and Alexander Skarsgård. The poster I'm spotlighting features a close-up look at a suited-up alien invader. Battleship opens in America May 18th.

Before closing out this column with some GetGlue linkage, I want to encourage you to watch Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth with Bill Moyers airing this month on most PBS stations across America (check your local listings here).  I got the dvd set a long time ago and've been recommending it and giving copies to friends ever since. No doubt one of the best parts of the set is the bonus segment with George Lucas titled, "The Mythology of Star Wars." Below is an excerpted clip of (the late) Prof. Campbell discussing profound mythological influences on "A New Hope."

Glue I got from GG last week included Coming Soon stickers for Silent House (3/9) and Game Change (3/10), and an additional two for Blu-ray releases Immortals (now in stores) and Jack And Jill (hitting shelves today, March 6th). Besides a new House of Stark sticker for the recent "Power and Grace" Game of Thrones trailer, you can also score Coming Soon glue for watching trailers for upcoming TV premieres of Rip The Runway (3/21), Scandal (4/1) and Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 (debuting 4/11).  From Marvel, new glue arrived last week promoting Ultimate Comics Ultimates Vol. 1, Venom #13.4, Amazing Spider-Man #680 and Ultimates #7.

Perhaps you've noticed I've stopped embedding my Favorite Webisodes and Music Videos of the Week in these TV columns. I didn't just stop because you can find them embedded in their respective Week-in-Review columns now, but also because it allows me to include more movie clips and bonus stuff here each week. Hopefully you've taken up my invitation to visit my two newer columns but if you haven't you'll still be able to see those music video and webisode picks here as hyperlinked text.
I really appreciate your ongoing interest and support, I hope to see you back here again next time. Have a Great Week and Happy Viewing!
