TV Week in Review  (week of 3/18/12)

Welcome to the first week of a new format and a crazy week for my hour-long list's numbering order. From now on I won't be naming my Honorable Mentions at the close of these columns anymore, rather I'll be listing them sans picture or clip (save for Psych and its *noted* special circumstance) attached to my normal lists now completing my Top Dozen(s). I've also changed the name of what I used to call my "Make-up Section" to what I've retitled the "Late Pass Zone." So, yeah, that happened - across all my columns. And while I've admittedly never shied away from naming tied victors this week it's gotten a little goofy (even for me) - you'll see what I mean in my hour-long section. hehe.

Networks doing remarkably well in this edition include ABC, AMC, CBS, FOX, and The CW. Nickelodeon's the only net listing in this edition's teen category, and is also worth mentioning for the fact their series Bucket & Skinner's Epic Adventures made my column's teen list for the first time ever. Each (non-teen) category was surprisingly competitive this time around but the sitcoms section was especially so. An extra (out-of-competition) sitcom I watched, thanks to NBC, was the early preview premiere of BFF. It entertained me enough that I plan to keep watching it. Catch the early premiere OnDemand or online here and score a Coming Soon sticker from GetGlue for simply sampling the BFF trailer here. BFF debuts April 4th.

Upcoming premieres this week include Make It or Break It & The Secret Life of the American Teenager (tonight 3/26), Bomb Patrol: Afghanistan (3/27), Steven Seagal's True Justice (3/30), and a sneak preview premiere of Magic City Friday, March 30th (titles in this sentence link to stickers available for each show from GetGlue). Saturday, March 31st brings the much anticipated series premiere of Beverly's Full House on OWN. And next Sunday (April Fool's Day) don't miss the series premiere of Scandal, the second season premiere of HBO's superlative Game of Thrones or the 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards (airing on CBS).

Now without further ado, onto my preferred picks from last week's primetime TV...

While a noticeable number of shows opted to air repeats last week my total hours viewed increased by three hours up to fifty-two and a half (from my last column's total of forty-nine and a half). Twenty-eight were spent watching hour-long programs, twelve and a half hours were dedicated to screening reality fare and a full dozen hours contributing to that total came from sitcoms (counting House of Lies).

I don't often hype books in these WiRs but this book-related Kickstarter project is one I believe deserves your attention. The project, titled Save the SciFi!, aims to transcribe and publish one out of print sci-fi book per month to save for posterity. To quote their 'about' statement, "We've seen too many sci-fi books that are out of print, out of circulation, and, worst of all (given the subject matter) unavailable in any digital format. Meaning, as of now, these books may never be seen in the future imagined in their pages. That's just not right." If this endeavor appeals to you visit their Kickstarter page and read more about it here. This item came to my attention thanks to Sword & Laser host Veronica Belmont tweeting about it.

Before getting to new trailers, posters and stickers I wanted to share the newly released trailer (posted 3/19) for The Walking Dead video game, featuring a brief introduction by Robert Kirkman (embedded below). A previously released teaser trailer (posted 3/15) actually runs a little longer but lacks the special intro; see that lengthier teaser trailer here.

HBO served up five new teaser trailers, one for each House, from Game of Thrones last week. Screen and read about all five here via MTV.

Erica Durance fans were pleased to get a second official trailer last week teasing her upcoming summer series, Saving Hope. Shortly after this clip hit the web so did the news, which I had no idea was at issue, that the Canadian produced (and named) series will indeed retain the title "Saving Hope" in the U.S. on NBC this June. Stay updated by following Saving HopeTV and NBC's official twitter accounts for the show.

Moving onto the movie beat, previews I found most engrossing last week were for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Stephenie Meyer's 2013 thriller, The Host. Watch the Lincoln trailer below then see and read about The Host's trailer here via MovieVine.

I usually do a bit of hunting for posters to feature in these columns but in all honesty I didn't do that this time 'cause these two posters came to my attention early last week and I knew as soon as I saw 'em they'd be the ones I'd highlight. Of course there's probably some super-awesome one-sheets I'm now ignorant of - since I didn't go hunting -  but I'm plenty happy to just spotlight this pair. The Depp poster is a hatless variant of one I featured (from a French film festival) a couple months back, while, the Miles poster is totally new to me. Having seen Miles perform live I'm incredibly eager to see Cheadle embody the role. Johnny Depp's Dark Shadows poster is one in a set of six each focusing on different characters, see pics of all six here via Empire.
Dark Shadows and Miles

Lots of GetGlue stickers came out last week giving me confidence that at least one will interest you. The following are all Coming Soon stickers (in order of due date) for upcoming TV programs: BFF (4/4), Magic City (4/6), Nurse Jackie (4/8), The Borgias (4/8), America Revealed (4/11 on PBS), The 2-nite Titanic mini-series event (4/14 & 4/15) and lastly, Girls (coming to HBO 4/15). Glue promoting upcoming movies included ones for the Tribeca Film Festival (running from 4/18 thru 4/29), Marley (naturally hitting 4/20), Marvel's The Avengers: Black Widow (5/4), Chernobyl Diaries (5/25) and for Stephenie Meyer's The Host (premiering March 2013). Marvel's true believers will likely enjoy these graphically impressive stickers for X-Factor #233, Avengers: X-Sanction #4, X-Men Legacy, Ultimate Comics X-Men, Vol. 1 and John Carter: The Gods of Mars #1.

Thanks for checking out this Week in Review installment, I greatly appreciate your interest. Please visit my other two weekly columns too, I put a fair amount of work into 'em, thanks. Have A Great Week & Happy Viewing!
