The Batman movie posted the third highest opening weekend of all time, behind the Avengers and the final Harry Potter movie.

Boxofficemojo.com reported that The Dark Knight Rises, the final installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, had ticket sales in excess of $160MM, the third largest opening in movie history. The movie ranks behind only The Avengers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part II in terms of weekend opening numbers. There are claims that The Dark Knight Rises had the highest "non 3-D" opening ever, but it's unknown how IMAX sales affected ticket sales. The Batman movie also handily beat all other competitors this weekend, coming in $140MM higher than second place Ice Age.
Warner Brothers did not intially release the sales figures out of respect for those who lost their lives when a gunman opened fire on a midnight showing of the Batman film at an Aurora, Colorado theatre Thursday night. James Holmes, the alleged gunman, had an advisory court hearing yesterday and is expected to be formally charged in the next week. The company also quietly made a donation to the victims of the shooting yesterday.
