History of the Scarab, and the Oan Guardians Master Plan

In an interview over at CBR, Tony Bedard fills readers in on upcoming plans for Blue Beetle, New Guardians, and what is in store specifically for Jaime Reyes and Kyle Rayner.

Blue Beetle #0 will flashback to delve into the Reach's Scarab Khaji-Da and it's history with Earth. Although the Scarab's origin was touched on in issue #1, this issue will go into more details including who was actually the first Earthling to bond with the Scarab armor when the Reach were developing and testing their initial prototypes of the scarabs. We'll see how Khanji-Da landed on Earth and how that lead to a Mayan High Priest becoming Earth's first Blue Beetle.

This will also be a large factor In months to come as Jaime will come face-to-face with the Reach in an unexpected way.

And look for more on the new Blue And Gold duo as we see Booster Gold's reaction to encountering a Reach Scarab Warrior based on Booster's information he has from the future.

The Reach were also involved in the attack on the Blue Lantern homeworld over in "Green Lantern: New Guardians" recently and Bedard hints that this may mean more involvement between the two titles some time in the future.

Touching on 'Green Lantern: New Guardians , Bedard says that we've already seen the Oan Guardians becoming gradually darker in tone and motives. This has been what's been driving the 'New Guardians' title to date, and will lead to the reveal of why all the different Corps rings sought out Kyle in issue #1.

The toughest thing about 'New Guardians' is juggling all those characters and trying to get across who they are and what their rings do and still have space left over to tell a story.

We know that the Guardians of the Universe are hunting Kye and in "The Third Army" event we will see them attempting to regain universal order by destroying free will through the mysterious Third Army.

The Guardians definitely feel justified in everything they do. They're not trying to be bad guys. They're trying to fix the universe. But the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, and the Guardians have become for all intents and purposes the biggest villains of all.

Bedard feels that New Guardians #0 will be a good jumping-on point for new readers.  Carol Ferris appears with an agenda that will put her in competition with Kyle for leadership of the New Guardians. Kyle will also attempt to master all the colors of the Emotional Spectrum in order to stop the Oan Guardians' master plan.

"Blue Beetle" #12 is on sale August 15.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #12 is on sale August 22.

Blue Beetle #0 is on sale September 19.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #0 is on sale September 19.

A life-long Chicago native, he was introduced to comics by his older brother's vast collection of Silver Age issues. When he is not at his day job as an IT geek or making the most of Chicago's three months of incredible summer, he can found spending way too much time with his very large, very loud Italian family. You will never find him on the likes of Facebook or Twitter as he scoffs at the necessity of most forms of social media.
