In this First Look at Hawkeye #2 press release, Marvel brags about how much all the websites who received free copies loved it.
Marvel sent out a press release today giving readers a first look at Hawkeye #2, the second issue of the new hit comic by Matt Fraction and David Aja. In the release, Marvel makes note of all the praise it received for the comic, suspiciously all from websites who recieved free advance review copies:
The critics have spoken, Hawkeye is a hit!
“9 out of 10” –Newsarama
“One of the best and most interesting superhero books on stands.” –Comic Book Resources
“Simply gorgeous to behold.” –iFanboy
“I can’t wait for the next chapter. “ –IGN
“A fun, unpredictable ride, which handles the Marvel Universe from a perspective which we haven’t seen before.” –The Beat
“This is a series that needs to be read.” –ComicVine
“Solid.” - ComicsAlliance
All high praise. But what would these sites have had to say if they had not been paid off? The Outhouse suspects the following:
"One of our top twenty or thirty books of the week." - Comic Book Resources
"Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..." - iFanboy
"WTF is this shit?" - IGN
"Hated it!" - The Beat
"Down with Marvel!" - ComicVine
"Shit sandwich." - ComicsAlliance"Marvel is to comics what horses are to Christopher Reeve." - Newsarama
The Outhouse doesn't point this out to make claims that comic book journalism is an incestuous cesspool of back-scratching and payola, where free review copies and exclusive access to talent are traded for glowing reviews and other fluff pieces, and the already mega-popular, corporate 1% of sites have a stranglehold on 99% of the unique hits. No, we're just wondering why Marvel won't bribe the Outhouse into loving its comics too!
Check out this high praise from the TWO reviews of Hawkeye The Outhouse posted on its front page (suck on that, Newsarama!):
"He's that bow and arrow guy on The Avengers, yeah." - Royal Nonesuch, The Outhouse
"It’s a highly enjoyable read and stands as a testament of what a good comic book should look like." - Spider Buggy, The Outhouse"There is some action and some fight scenes..." - Royal Nonesuch, The Outhouse
"Hawkeye’s antagonist is a Russian landlord in a tracksuit." - Spider Buggy, The Outhouse
"A story like this could only benefit from a very dynamic artist team, and David Aja and Matt Hollingsworth show how adept they are at the standard motions and rhythms of life." - Royal Nonesuch, The Outhouse
"While Invincible Iron Man focuses on the character’s superheroics with great aplomb, Hawkeye does not..." - Spider Buggy, The Outhouse
"We see everything we love and recognize about Clint Barton in this issue." - Royal Nonesuch, The Outhouse
So as you can see, it's entirely possible for people to like Marvel comics without being paid off with illicit review copies of their books, but, like an attractive girl who used to be fat, Marvel's self-esteem has not yet caught up to its sexy allure. This doesn't have to be a bad. If nothing else, we can assume that Marvel probably gives really good blow jobs.
Here's the press release:
