ABC has ordered a pilot for a series that sounds a little like Unwritten.
ABC has picked up a pilot order for a new series entitled "Saga", which focuses on the mysterious disappearance of the maker of a Harry Potter-esque fantasy series and involves characters from the books coming to life. If that sounds familiar, it's because it sounds a bit like Unwritten, a Vertigo series about a man named Tom Taylor who learns that he might be a character from his father's popular children's book series come to life.
While we're sure that it's all a bunch of coincidences, Deadline reports that the series would be a good companion to Once Upon a Time, a series about fairy tale characters living in the real world. If that sounds familiar, it's because it sounds an awful lot like Fables, which also features fairy tale characters living in the real world. As you might recall, there was a lot of scuttlebutt and controversy involving Once Upon a Time last year and its similarities to Fables, in part because ABC was developing a Fables series before it decided to move onto a totally different fairy tales in real life show.
At this rate, we might be seeing other totally original series like "Alone," about the last man left alive on earth, "Tomahawk," a crime series set on a reservation, and "The Devil," following Lucifer's life after leaving Hell. Maybe we'll even get a series about a dream lord and his delightful siblings.
The Outhouse sent intrepid reporter Stoneman to ABC's headquarters to question ABC's chief television executive, Dick Dastardly, about the curious similarities. "Drats and double drats!" shouted Dastardly, who, with the help of his dog, Muttley, tied Stoneman to some railroad tracks and fled the scene.
We attempted to follow up with a phone call, but the only response we recieved was Muttley's wheezing laughter. The Outhouse will keep you updated on any future developments once we have completed a daring, last minute rescue of our valued reporter.
