Thursday's Marvel The Next Big Thing liveblog focused on the upcoming Marvel NOW! title, Young Avengers. Joining the liveblog were the title's creators, writer Kieron Gillen, artist Jamie McKelvie and editor Lauren Sankovitch.
Gillen describes the book as being optimistic and about the ideal of Earth's mightiest coming together. Like the original Avengers, Young Avengers will have its origins with (Kid) Loki. Why does he want to bring the Young Avengers together? To "essentially kill Wiccan". Though the Avengers do appear briefly in issue 2, where the Young Avengers go, they cannot he helped by them.
On the characters, Miss America is said to be very violent and to have been a superhero longer than anyone knows. She knows something about Wiccan that is a mystery. Wiccan makes a mistake early in the tale that drives the book. Hulkling plays superhero at night because he feels it would be a waste not to use his talents. Kate Bishop and Noh Varr start off as the B-story couple. Noh Varr is back because no one tells him what to do. Speed is not around in the first issue, but may appear around issue #6.
McKelvie did a lot of research to make sure the characters dressed their ages. The goal is to be different and modern, having every fight scene a certain way and never use it again. Gillen said that they would not do covers that are homages or pastiches. Sankovich says that McKelvie contributes more to the book than just the design and describes the team as having "alchemy".
Young Avengers #1 goes on sale January 23, 2013.
