Marvel released a teaser that simply contained the words "of the dead," with absolutely no other information.
Most industry analysts believed it would be nearly impossible to top Marvel's extremely vague Marvel NOW! teasers, which famously featured the names of two creators and a single adjective, but Marvel has proven naysayers wrong by releasing a teaser at ComicsPro that simply contains the words "of the dead" underneath a Marvel logo, and a promise that whatever this is, it will happen this fall.
Does the teaser imply that Marvel has purchased the rights to George Romero's zombie franchise (probably for twelve dollars and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich)?
Does it reference the rumors of an upcoming death of Marvel Universe moral center Wolverine?
Did Marvel instruct its unpaid interns on what to put in the teaser using the popular children's game "telephone?"
At this time, no one knows, but Newsarama mogul Mike Doran had the following to say:
Comics book retailers attending Marvel’s breakfast presentation at Friday’s ComicsPro membership meeting might have gotten a quick tease to the publisher’s next big event and/or storyline and/or story arc.
While we were unable to acquire an image, retailers in attendance tell Newsarama Marvel showed a teaser – mostly black and red – with their block logo on top, followed by the copy “of the Dead”, and then “Fall 2013” at the bottom.
So it is either an event, or a storyline, or a story arc (which is somehow different than a storyline). Nice job on that, Newsarama. This is why Marvel pays you the big bucks.
Doran also pointed out that Marvel declined to comment on the teaser to Newsarama, which is surprising considering Newsarama is basically an unofficial extension of Marvel's marketing department, but it is believed that the company did promise to hand over "a raping assload" of money in exchange for full page banner ads for the event/storyline/story arc, which will run alongside Newsarama's five star reviews of the as yet unknown project.
In any case, we're sure that whatever it is, we will see many more vague teasers leading up to a disappointing reveal three weeks after the event is spoiled on Bleeding Cool. Stay tuned to the Outhouse as we report on these exciting developments.
UPDATE: Marvel has sent out a press release with the actual image attached.
UPDATE: Bleeding Cool, never missing out on a chance for self-aggrandizement, have taken credit for breaking the story of their being something vaguely death-like coming up sometime in the next year or so or maybe sooner or maybe later, in the Marvel Universe, probably, with this vague teaser apparently being proof. No, we're not making this up.
