Marvel is developing a live-action arena show.
Marvel is officially a circus! No, this isn't a stinging criticism on Marvel's office shenanigans or erratic publishing schedule. The company is literally developing a circus. Well, technically it's a "live show", but it's produced by Feld Productions, the circus company responsible for Disney on Ice and the Ringling Bros. and Barlum and Bailey circuses, so it's close enough.
Here's the details: Feld Entertainment is developing a $10+ million live arena show that showcases Marvel's deep cast and mythology in a live show. Joe Quesada, Marvel ringmaster and chief clown, has been heavily involved in the project and admits to being "geeked out" several times during the production of the show.
While details of the plot's shows are under wraps, Quesada says it'll follow a basic theme of "world is threatened, heroes save it", something rarely seen in today's Marvel events. Whether the show deals with popular Marvel themes of "Can I convince an out of touch army commander to declare war of the husband on the dead woman I love" or "Is it rape if I bang my arch-enemy's ex-wife while mentally possessing his body" remains to be seen.
Since it's a family show, I'm optimistic that we'll at least see Wolverine have a crowd participation segment where he picks out a few children from the audience and then murders them, while the Avengers cheer behind him.
Of course, the whole thing harkens back to Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, which has been the source of semi-topical SNL jokes for the better part of three years. The difference between that Broadway musical and this, however, is that the new Marvel live show was not written by or has any association with Bono.
Anyways, for full details, check out the Billboard article at the top of the page. Marvel Live is coming to an arena to you....eventually.
