Elder Scrolls Online: Crafting

Elder Scrolls Online: Crafting

Another topic players have been eager to learn more on is how crafting will work in ESO. Fortunately we've found out a little more.

It seems that the basics of crafting are as easy to pick up on as any Elder Scrolls game, except with some additional options. You'll gather the parts and/or ingredients you needs and jump on the appropriate crafting apparatus to 'craft' it.  Your skill will determine how good and how powerful an item you can craft.

When you want to craft and approach the apparatus you wish to use, the game asks you if you want to use it and once you select yes, it moves into a controlled screen where your character is using the item (Much like Skyrim where you see yourself mixing potions, leaning over an enchanting table, hammering at an anvil, etc.).  Once you are in the crafting screen the game will open up a menu for Primary Ingredient, Secondary Ingredient, and then three spots for Additives. The additives are what can give your weapon it's special properties, leveling up to five of each additive, creating a truly specialized weapon.

We saw two examples of what you can make. The first was the Dawnstar Ale which I made in the demo. I had found some grains in a barrel in town and also got some Pure Water off of a shelf in the island’s palace. I was going through a dungeon and found a campfire. It said “Press E to use the campfire” and so I did. Then my Orc was standing with a bowl and working over the fire. Provisioner had two categories: cooking and brewing. I was able to add the Grains and Pure Water as the main ingredients and DawnStar Ale was made. I did not have any Additives this time, but more on that later.

The next example we saw was during a demo when Paul Sage had his Orc blacksmithing an axe. For those of you interested: yes you can make all of the racial armors and weapons in Elder Scrolls, plus a few other classics. Daedric weapons please, yes, and thanks. Paul crafted the axe using Iron Ingots and another ingredient, but then went crazy with the Additives (again more later). The result was an Iron Battleaxe of Undead Bane and Lightning. Yes, you heard that right. Because Paul was an Orc he was able to make the axe in the Orc styling. All the races will automatically get their own weapon and armor racials to learn. A Blacksmith can learn to craft other types of weapons and armor, but they told us that was something to be discovered in game and not just handed out freely.

   There are five crafting professions:

  • Provisioner - making food stuffs
  • Enchanter - putting magical enchantments onto weapons and apparel
  • Weaponsmith - A focus of Blacksmithing
  • Armorsmith - Another focus of Blacksmithing
  • Alchemist - Creating potions (and perhaps poison if it's in the game).

ZeniMax wants to make crafting an important part of the game and allow players to create some of the best loot with it as well.  Becoming a master at one or more of the crafting professions can bring great results.  Should you find gear during a raid that you like instead, you can still use crafting to improve it.
