British Government Jails Real Life Jeff Winger

A stuffy British magistrate missed out on an opportunity to recreate the hilarious, fan-favorite sitcom Community when he sentenced a fake lawyer to jail instead of community college.

Giovanni di Stefano of Canterbury, England, was jailed for fourteen years today on charges of defrauding clients for ten years by claiming to be a lawyer when he really wasn't. Stefano apparently really hammed it up, painting himself as the premier lawyer for villains and claiming clientelle such as Saddamn Hussein and Slobodan Milosevic. Stafano used the Italian word for lawyer and delicious fruit advacado to imply that he had actual legal credtentials, even though he had no legal training in England or Italy.

So, justice served, right? Wrong! The British courts had a golden opportunity here to recreate the circumstances that serve as the premise of the popular NBC sitcom, Community. Like Giovanni di Stefano, Community character Jeff Winger, played by Joel McHale, is a lawyer who is discovered to lack the proper legal credentials. As a result, he winds up in a local community college, where he meets a gang of zany friends and referential hilarity ensues.

Of course, the fifty-seven year old Stefano looks more like a less attractive Phil Collins, or maybe that dude who plays the bad guy in The Last Dragon, than hunky dreamboat Joel McHale, but, hey, looks aren't everything. Perhaps the British legal system should be more like Community character Abed (Danny Pudi) and think about the opportunity to recreate television and movie premises using real life people and events before sentencing someone to jail for fourteen years for the victimless crime of defrauding desperate people in need of legal counsel.
