Last week, we showed you a promo picture of Bronze Tiger, the former African American superhero turned New 52 anthropomorphic cat. This week, DC has released a new image, featuring Cheshire, the DC villain and former Roy Harper love interest.
You'll recall that Cheshire was a main villain on the cancelled Young Justice series and also happens to be a female character of non-Caucasian descent, which is the DC equivalent to being a leper who also happens to be a Cleveland sports fan. So, when DC revealed that they were reintroducing the character in Red Hood and the Outlaws, we presumed that they turned her into a naked cat creature with DDD boobs and a pelvis that could rotate 360 degrees independent of the rest of her body and incorporated some sort of mildly racist Asian motif into her makeup/face tattoos.
Huh, that's....that's not bad for a female DC character. Her midriff is actually covered. Her boobs are only sort of hanging out of her costume. And hey, her legs, which are entirely exposed by the short, short skirt she's wearing, is largely covered up by leg holsters and thigh high boots! And instead of Asian tattoos, it looks like she has cat stripes, which should cancel out the Internet outrage (because, y'know, the Internet loves cats).
Could this be the beginning of a new age of DC treating their female characters with respect? Well, probably not. But hey, at least they haven't regressed further since yesterday. And for DC, that's an accomplishment.
