A Marvel newsletter has revealed that Avengers Assemble has been cancelled, although no set date has been given as to when. Here's the official notice:
Avengers Assemble will be ending soon, and all subscribers will roll over to Avengers written by Marvel superstar Jonathan Hickman. Avenging Spider-Man will be ending, and all subscribers will be switching to the all new Superior Spider-Man Team-Up written by Christopher Yost. Last but not least Marvel Universe Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will be changing its title to Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble. Be on the lookout for these exciting new titles!
The series began as an unofficial tie-in to the Avengers movie written by Brian Bendis, and featured the movie cast fighting Thanos in a prequel of sorts to Infinity. The series also served to reintroduce the Guardians of the Galaxy. Kelly Sue DeConnick took over the title after Bendis's initial arc was up, the first female writer to ever write an Avengers ongoing series (although Anne Nocenti did write a two issue fill-in arc in 1984).
As much as I hate to say it, the book was doomed almost out the start. The series suffered an astronomical 64% drop in sales over the first six months under Bendis, which all but doomed the series. Although DeConnick's run stopped sales figures from free-falling, the book was still selling under 30,000 going into April.
While I'll be sad to see Avengers Assemble go, the book was rather redundant, as the book's cast all appear in other books. Here's to hoping we'll see DeConnick move on to bigger and better books. She's certainly too good of a writer for Marvel to keep shuttered away on small projects!
UPDATE: Subscribers received a follow up email stating that Avengers Assemble has not been cancelled.
Whoops! Has Kang been messing with the timestream or have we just been getting confused?
The Avengers keep on assembling! Avengers Assemble is not ending, it’s carrying on its merry way, and its loyal subscribers will stay right where they are.
Marvel Universe Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will also be keeping on track.
We’re so sorry about the confusion! Avengers forever!
So, yeah. Just never mind this article.
