Mary Jane Watson won't be appearing in Amazing Spider-Man 2. Shailene Woodley, who was to play MJ in the film, told EW that the role had been cut from the film, due to a change in the plot of the recently announced Amazing Spider-Man 3. Here's the exact quote:
Of course I’m bummed… but I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason….based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.
It's believed that Sony made the decision after reading One More Day, the controversial Spider-Man story that retconned Spider-Man's marriage to Mary Jane out of existence. "Who knew it was so easy to get rid of stuff we didn't really like," one executive is believed to have said.
Meanwhile, the MJ/Peter Parker fanbase was outraged by the news. "If you think this will stop me from commissioning nude pictures of Mary Jane from every artist I meet, you've got another thing coming," raged one fan.
"Doesn't matter," said another. "I'll still cheer when they snap Gwen Stacy's neck."
Bleeding Cool believes that the role won't be recast, so fans of Shailene Woodley can rest easy. Those who believed that Woodley "wasn't hot enough" to play MJ (sadly an actual reaction) can still get gored by a dull-horned ox.
