While Alone, the newly announced six part Image miniseries, won't be released until the fall, it's already gaining some buzz due to a recently announced Eisner category. "When I heard that the Eisners would have a 'Hardest to Spell Creative Team' Award, I knew it was my time to shine," said Alone writer J. Michael Straczynski. Straczynski is better known as JMS by the comic community, in part so fans, creators, and editors don't have to spell out his name, which contains a string of 6 consonants.
JMS knew he had to find an artist with an equally hard to spell last name. So he called up Bill Sienkiewicz. "I was on the fence on whether to work on Alone," said Sienkiewicz, who can't be referred to by his initials. "But once I heard the Eisners were finally recognizing creators based on how difficult it was to spell their last name, I knew I had to work with Joe."
The creative team of Straczynski and Sienkiewicz is already being considered the favorite for the new Eisner category. With both names having Scrabble scores of 50+, other publishers are scrambling to find competing creative teams.
"We've already tried to book Duane Swierczynski, Lee Bermejo, Marco Djurjevic and Carlo Pagulayan, but they've already been snatched up by other companies," said one high up Marvel executive with an easy to spell last name.
DC looked to its existing creators to compete for the award. "We're happy to announce that Shabglltuhthrtyblurg, or Grant Morrison as he was formerly known, will be teaming up with unpaid intern Vlad Kozinkerov on a yet to be announced series to compete for the highly coveted Eisner Award," said a DC release.
However, not everyone is happy with the new award category. "I think it's terrible," said Dan Slott, who has yet to have anyone misspell his name during his 20 years in the comics industry. "The two 't's' at the end of my name never screws anyone up."
