Many wondered whether or not J.J. Abrams wants to return for the next Star Trek movie now that he has Star Wars Episode VII ahead of him. Zachary Quinto (Spock) told the audience at Galway Film Fleadh in Ireland that Star Trek 3 will begin filming next year.
Star Trek 3 should be filming, I suppose, next year. It’s going to be made a lot quicker than the last one. That’s the plan, although nothing is confirmed yet.
When asked if he hoped to appear in Episode VII, Quinto said he doesn't, but would like to cameo in The Big Bang Theory.
My cardboard cutout has already been on it, you know. I had to give my permission for them to use it. I love Simon and I also worked with Johnny (Galecki) on a new film called The Invitation (also starring Luke Wilson and Topher Grace). I have been mentioned two times on it, actually.
Personally, I would like to see J.J. Abrams on the BBT playing Leonard's dad or something similar since they look like doppelgangers to me, but with Sheldon's fascination with Spock Quinto would fit in easily enough.
I'm not sure about the status of Abrams myself. With Episode VII ramping up, it would be very difficult for him to focus on the next Trek movie at the same time. Perhaps Quinto is right in that the studio wants to begin shooting next year, but just not with Abrams involvement.
