Pacific Rim and Thor: The Dark World star plays former South African President in biopic to be released this fall.

Idris Elba is currently rocking the screen in Pacific Rim. This fall, he’ll be appearing in two more pictures. One is Thor: The Dark World, where he’ll again be playing Heimdall, the baddest mother in Asgard (sorry, Thor. It’s true). The other is Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, where he will be playing the former South African president.
A new long-form trailer for Mandela was recently released. It primarily shows Mandela leading the struggle to end Apartheid in South Africa in the early Sixties, and his arrest and trial which led to his being imprisoned for over twenty-seven tears.
Mandela’s later life was dramatized in Invictus,
with Morgan Freeman playing the then-President of post-Apartheid South Africa. It will be interesting to see how the two performances compare, and if Elba will get an Academy Awards Best Actor nomination like Freeman for the earlier film.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedeom is set to be released in the US on Nov. 29.
