Dark Horse released an animated gif last week showing Serenity, the space ship from Firefly, a canceled Joss Whedon television series with a rabid fanbase (sorry for the redundant statement). That rabid fanbase, known as firebronies, are currently experiencing something very unusual for fans of the sci-fi western: hope.
"The Firefly project cycle is well defined," explained Professor Thaddeus T. Puffinbottoms, lead researcher in the Futile Pursuits Department of the College of Fanboyism at prestigious DeVry University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. "First, the project is announced, and fans of Joss Whedon get excited. It comes out, runs for a season, maybe a season and a half, and then gets canceled like all non-Buffy-related Whedon projects. This is followed by ten years of despair and misery."
Indeed, firebronies have been living in this final phase of the cycle for more than a decade, and have tried numerous tactics to bring the show back on the air, including trying to raise money to buy it and hand it over to series star Nathan Fillion, to no avail. Dark Horse's teaser has given these long-suffering fans hope, but The Outhouse would caution them not to become too invested. It's not like it's going to lead to a full-on revival of the TV show or anything like that.
"I am totally, 100% invested in this," said an exhuberant Samantha Godwin, president of the Des Moines, Iowa chapter of the Joss Whedon fan club. "It's going to lead to a full-on revival of the TV show!"
