The upcoming Man of Steel sequel will be filmed in Detroit, the Detroit Free Press has reported. Michigan has approved over $35,000,000 in tax incentives for the upcoming movie, which will feature Henry Cavill as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman. It's believed that thousands of extras will be needed for the movie, a boon to one of the most unemployed cities in America.
Reportedly, Detroit was able to seal the deal after promising WB that they could actually destroy the city in the sequel, saving the studios millions in expensive CGI costs. "We have plenty of empty buildings that Superman can destroy with reckless abandon," said Detroit mayor Dave Bing. "And for only $5 a head, we'll even throw citizens inside for Superman not to save."
In a brief statement, WB complimented Detroit on its compelling "lawlessness and overwhelming sense of despair," which makes it the perfect backdrop for a superhero movie. "It also helps that Detroit is desperate for cash due to its ongoing bankruptcy proceedings," said the statement. "So we were able to negotiate a really favorable rate."
The city also expressed hopes that Batman and Superman would be able to clean up crime in Detroit, as it has the highest violent crime rate in the nation. "I'm really glad Superman is bulletproof," said Bing. "Because someone will shoot at him at least once. It's basically a Detroit rite of passage." The city has promised that filming locations will enjoy the same public services as other local business, which has led WB into researching private security firms that specialize in active war zones to help protect their filming crews.
It's unknown whether any sports figures will cameo in the movie a la Hines Ward in The Dark Knight Rises, but it's rumored that Detroit Lions linebacker Ndamukong Suh has been auditioning for the part for the last two years by stomping on opposing football players after tackling them.
Filming will begin in 2014.
