Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuted to big numbers last night, with 11.9 million viewers tuning in to watch the pilot episode. More importantly (to advertisers), the show pulled in a 4.6 rating (AKA, 4.6% of all Nielsen viewers aged 18-49) for the evening, beating NCIS and The Voice. However, NCIS still managed to bring in more total viewers, with 19.4 million tuning in to watch the departure of some actress whom we don't care about because we're not 65.
So what does this all mean? Well, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had the highest rated scripted debut of any show this fall (so far), which is good. It also confirms that young people would rather watch a procedural about superheroes than a procedural about naval officers continually dying from non-Naval activities.
We'll see how the show does next week, when it tries to retain all those viewers with sweet, sweet disposable income.
