Diamond Sales Stats Show Villains Month 3Dnado Was Hugely Successful

And this, fanboys, is why we can't have nice things.

In the months leading up to September and during the month itself, as DC Comics was enveloped in a 3Dnado of stupidity over their 3D Villains Month covers, screwing over fans and retailers alike, one thing was always very clear to The Outhouse: financially, the gambit would be wildly successful. Well, Diamond's sales numbers are in, and, lo and behold, we were correct. DC absolutely destroyed Marvel and the rest of the industry in both dollar and unit share, with 40% in one and 45% in the other, compared to Marvel's 28% and 29%. Despite Marvel's Infinity and Battle of the Atom super-mega-crossover event books and tie-ins making a strong showing in the top ten, nobody could compete with the sheer weight of DC's 52 gimmick variant covers combined with a speculative bubble created by shortages.

This is why, no matter how many fans and creators complain about DC's myopic marketing practices, creator bullying, tone-deafness, and overall stupidity on the internet, the company will continue down the path it's currently on. When it comes down to it, it's extremely lucrative. So, moar 3D gimmick covers, moar allocations, moar creative team changes, moar editorial interference, more naked Harley Quinn suicide contests! Why not? It works. Extremely well.

And if the sales drop right after this? Well, time for another gimmick month then.

If you don't like those things above, but you bought DC books in September, this is your fault. We're not judging, by the way. DC's shenanigans give us at The Outhouse interesting stuff to write about, so we're perfectly content to continue to be handed that material. However, if the practices above bother you as a fan, and yet you rewarded DC for those practices by giving them money, then you have no one to blame but yourself. Until the rampant stupidity of super-mega-crossover events, gimmick variant covers, and now artificial shortages are proven to be unprofitable, both major comics companies will continue to use them constantly to boost sales.

In lighter news, Image dominated the trade paperback chart, with East of West #1 coming in on top and the company holding a total of five of the top ten spots. Imagine how much better they could have done if the Walking Dead trades had come with foil-embossed hologram covers and shops had only been shipped 50% of what they ordered. Image, you're doing it wrong. Go dangle a creator over a hotel balcony until he or she agrees to kill off a minority character or something. You're slacking here.
