PS4 has sold through over 1 million units within 24 hours of the launch in North America!!! :D— Shuhei Yoshida (@yosp) November 17, 2013
Gamers were ready for the next generation in console gaming, lining up to buy the new Playstation 4 as soon as it hit the shelves. Sony announced they sold over one million units in the first 24 hours. This covers only the United States and Canada, with their International Launch hitting Europe and Latin America on November 29th. This makes the PS4 Sony's fastest selling console to date. By the end of the week we will see how it compares with the XBox One's sales, which hits shelves November 22nd.
The launch hasn't been without it's problems with a number of gamers reporting bricked units, with the console already receiving its own moniker reminiscent of XBox 360's red ring of death - the "blue line (or light) of death". Although a large number of complaints have been made on sites like Amazon and reddit about the issue, in reality it is effecting only .4 percent of units sold (or around 4000 units). Sony says many issues can be fixed over the phone with support and for those that cannot the customer has two options. For gamers near a Sony store, Sony can often perform maintenance on site or replace the system without a wait. If you are not near a Sony store they will mail you a box to ship the console in, and then in 5-7 days you will get your repaired console or a replacement.
It remains to be seen what effect this issue will have on perception and future sales with the XBox One days away from release. But PS4s that didn't have this initial problem have reportedly held up well to extended gaming sessions.
