Fandom Outraged as DC Comics Sort-Of Lies to 7th Grader

A story making the rounds on the net has fans up in arms because DC refused to tell a 7th grader that Marvel is better than they are.

It's a slow news day, which means its time for the comics media to scour Reddit for stuff to write about. Today, the topic du jour is a seventh grader who sent a letter to DC Comics as part of a school project. DC sent him some free comics (those MONSTERS!), and also responded to some of his questions. One of those asked how DC planned to compete with Marvel in the cinematic arena, with Marvel's movies seemingly dominating DC. DC responded that their movies far outsell Marvel's. The internet exploded. Here's the letters, so you can get caught up with the outrage:

WHAT?! HOW DARE THEY?! EVERYONE KNOWS MARVEL'S MOVIES ARE THE BEST AND DC'S MOVIES ARE HUGE STINKING TURDS! RESET THE COUNTER!!!

Except, not really. Box Office Mojo keeps a chart of all the superhero movies since 1978 here. Here's the top ten:

While The Avengers holds the top spot, the Dark Knight series holds #2 and #3, beating out all the Iron Man and Spider-Man films. Man of Steel is at #10, beating out all the other Marvel movies like Thor, Captain America, the X-Men franchise, and Howard the Duck. If you take into account that the Spider-Man movies are produced by Sony and have little to do with Marvel, Marvel has four movies in the top ten while DC has three. If you add the totals of every single movie produced by DC/Warner Bros. and compare them to the ones produced by Marvel/Disney, DC does indeed come out on top, though they don't "far exceed" the sales as the letter claims. Of course, if you add in all the films based on Marvel characters, Marvel comes out on top easily.

So the claim isn't really accurate, while not being a complete lie either. But... so what? Do people want DC to tell this kid that they suck and Marvel is better than them? Of course they're not going to do that. They chose to arrange the facts in a way that looks better for them, and exaggerate a little too, but for fuck's sake, they took the time to answer a kid's letter and they sent him free comics. Maybe, just this once, we should cut them some slack. Here's the comics they sent:

Oh wait, they sent the kid shitty Nu52 comics! Fuck that! RESET THE COUNTER!!! AOOOGA! AOOOOGA!

Just kidding, we're not resetting the counter. Lighten up a bit, fandom. If nothing else, this is a step up for them - they didn't tell this kid that he's too young for their 45 year old demographic and that he should be reading Scooby Doo instead.

On another note, DC - your movies do suck eggs compared to Marvel's, and you should do something about that. Maybe sales will follow. Also, it's "far exceed all of Marvel's in sales," not "all of Marvels." This is the seventh grade. Punctuation matters.
