Well, it's finally happening: WAKFU is invading the United States via Kickstarter. The studio that makes the series, Ankama launched a Kickstarter for the EXTREMELY popular series earlier this week. In just a few days, it has already achieved an English Dub (with the original French audio with English/French/Spanish subtitles) for the first season that will be collected on Blu-Ray here in the US. Here's the official video Ankama posted on the kickstarter page:
So what the heck is WAKFU you ask? It was originally based on a popular MMORG video game of the same name. The best way to describe the animated series from what this reporter knows of it is this: it is a mixture of steam-punk, fantasy, it crashes the same boundaries that Avatar: The Last Airbender did (telling a stellar story in a world filled with memorable characters that can be enjoyed by both children and adults). So if you're a fan of that sort of stuff, you might fancy WAKFU. Here's a video that showcases the best the show has to offer (minus Season 1 "Big Bad", Nox, whose character supposedly I'm told I would very much enjoy):
As of this moment it's at $108,000 and the next goal in sight is the $150,000 goal of Dubbing episode 27 in English along with Orgest OVA. After that if $200,000 is met then all of Season 2 of the show will be dubbed in English. If the goal of $300,000 is met then the 3 OAV made in Japan.
Considering the $100,000 goal has been met here's what to expect for the WAKFU: Season 1 Blu-Ray:
- WAKFU Season 1: 26 episodes of 26 minutes each
- Bonus features with interview of the team and artistic director
- The exclusive storyboard of Episode #0: Goultard Story (never broadcasted on TV)
- A report on the English dubbing with a special French vs English behind-the-scenes video
- A 12 page presentation booklet
We'll keep you informed on this developing story and if the Kickstarter surpasses any of it's set goals.
