¡Hola comrades¡ Juan Cena here with another edition of Cubano Review. El Presidente has been concerned with the threats to La Revolution in Venezuela, and he is back in the sensory deprivation tank trying to commune with the spirit of dear departed Hugo Chavez. That leaves me to detail Robert Rodriguez’s new television project, Matador.
El Rey has announced that Rodriguez, the fledgling cable channel’s founder, will be directing the pilot for Matador, a new series about a soccer futbol star who is secretly a CIA agent. He’s also producing the series along with Fringe and Sleepy Hollow creators Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.
Matador tells the story of Antonio “Matador” Bravo, a futbol star who is also an undercover CIA operative. He uses his fame to gain “access to powerful circles of corruption and villainy.” It’s just like the old 1960’s series I Spy, only with soccer and a Latino central character instead of tennis and Bill Cosby.
There’s no word of casting yet, but if Richard Rodriguez is involved, what could possibly go wrong? Okay other than, Machette Kills bombing at the box office? Maybe casting Lady Gaga wan’t such a good idea after all.
Matador will debut in July on Rodriguez’s fledgling El Rey network, which states it’s aimed at “the renegade in everyone.” It currently features reruns of Dark Angel and The X-Files, along with film classics such as The Harder They Come and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It will also be debuting a TV series based on Rodriguez’s classic film From Dusk ‘Til Dawn in March.
