Bleeding Cool ran an article this morning claiming that Heroclix is releasing a new Harley Quinn figure which apparantly shows the DC character giving 2013 Herocliz World Champion Jake Williams a lapdance. They cited a small promotional pic showing Harley half-straddling a slumped Williams sitting in a chair, as well as a comment from Williams laughing about a thread made to address the controversy on a HeroClix forum. Here's a blurry image of the figurine, courtesy of Bleeding Cool.
As of 9:30 AM this morning, the Outhouse has received no less than three emails from various readers asking for the infamous "Has DC Done Something Stupid Today" counter because of the figurine. While a "Lapdance Harley Quinn" figure would be prime reset material, there's only one problem: that's not what the figurine depicts at all.
As stated by Williams later in the HCRealms thread that Johnston pulled the "Lapdance Harley" phrase from, the Harley Quinn figurine is actually modelled after a scene from Batman: Arkham Asylum, where Harley holds the warden of the asylum hostage. Here's a still from the scene in question.
Williams confirmed the link between the two images, and the figurine's pose is almost identical to Harley's in the image above.
While I personally think the figurine is a bit tacky, I think just about everything DC does with Harley Quinn is tacky nowadays. And while I think Williams living out his bondage fantasy with a fictional character is a poor choice for a Heroclix figurine, I don't play the game, so I can't really comment on whether that's a common theme in Heroclix or not.
Bottom line: a hostage themed Harley Quinn doesn't really generate the same controversy buzz a lapdance figurine does. Nor does it necessitate a counter reset. Sorry, folks, but thanks for playing.
